Looking for pilots to join a study group chat

Hey everyone,
I recently started a WhatsApp group for student pilots and aviators who want to learn together, ask questions, share study resources, and help each other progress through flight training.

Whether you’re working on:
PPL
Instrument Rating
Commercial
CFI
ATP

…or just starting your aviation journey, you’re welcome to join.

The goal is to create a community where pilots can discuss written exams, checkrides, flight training, aviation careers, and lessons learned along the way.
We currently have members ranging from student pilots to certificated pilots, and we’d love to grow the community.

Drop a comment or send me a DM if you’d like an invite.

Modular Frozen ATPL Cost Breakdown

Hi all,

Following up on my post about how long it took me to complete the ATPL theory, I figured I'd do something similar for the flying costs.

I am officially done with the flying part of training; only MCC still needs to be done but it's scheduled and I know the price beforehand, so all costs are "accounted for". All the flying (IR, CPL, ME Class Rating, MEIR, UPRT) took me roughly 7 months to complete, whilst working a full time job. This works out to around .8 flights per week (didn't feel like it!), or 3 flights per week for the weeks that I actually flew.

Background and Assumptions

I did my PPL quite some time ago and flew for fun before deciding to finally pursue the ATPL. Hence, I will not include the PPL (impossible to know how much I paid at this point, but I'd estimate roughly around $7000-8000 (US)) or time building as part of the costs. I already had a headset and an iPad, so those costs are also not included.

As for the school, it is located in western Germany.

Cost Overview

For a quick overview:

  • CBIR: 11690€ (FNPTII and C172)
  • CPL: 7596€ (C152 and DA42)
  • MEIR: 5008€ (DA42)
  • MEP CR: 5360€ (DA42)
  • MCC: 3300€ (A320 Sim)
  • UPRT: 2350€ (G115D)

For the entire theory, including travel costs to test centers (Austrocontrol), question banks, exam fees, and theory course, I paid roughly 6671€. For the question banks, I did three "rounds" of subscriptions; first was AviationExam and then 2x6 months for Airhead.

As for "hidden fees" or unexpected fees, there weren't really any. I did buy two charts and a marker to write on them, amounting to 18.50€.

The real crazy part to me is the landing fees: 1596€! And then 43€ in Emissionsentgelt (emissions charge). If I had paid a bit more attention to the fees I was getting charged, I would have prioritized practicing at cheaper airports in the area.

For those that like things visually, here is a Sankey diagram: https://imgur.com/a/p5ysvIp

Summary

All in all, considering the assumptions above, the frozen ATPL cost me 45027€.

If you have any questions, I'd be glad to answer them!
