Should I try for PSLF??
Hi guys, I’m currently in 190k of students loans due to grad school (and living expenses, I wasn’t fortunate enough to be able to afford living out of state where I got accepted) and I will be only making like 60-70k a year (this might even be a little higher than what I’ll actually take home) I start work as a therapist in a PSLF eligible job and just graduated so I’ll start making money soon. My concern with trying for PSLF is the requirement to be in an IDR plan. I’m worried that I will go into an IDR plan and pay less than my minimum causing interest to accrue and my actual balance being way higher than it should be by the time I actually qualify for PSLF after 120 payments.
My main concern: is it likely I’ll actually get PSLF if I lock in to the 120 monthly payments in an IDR plan? If there is some uncertainty of that I’m worried I could have just started paying the minimum (which is ~2.3k/month) to get rid of the loan in 10 years. I just worry that 2.3k is just so high and I live alone so I’ll really be struggling so an IDR plan sounds more appealing if in the end I’ll get forgiven. Considering I also took loans for school and living expenses, does this count for PSLF?
Does anyone have success with PSLF, and if so what EXACTLY do I need to do? I’m worried that there are too many loopholes that make it hard to actually qualify.
If anyone has any advice please do share, I gotta start paying soon 😭
