Something along the lines of still living in the small town/environment where its people caused MC trauma such as bullying or abuse.

They are stuck in this place and stuck on past memories and couldn't thrive due to the feeling of paralysis even though it has been more than a decade.

They lived a sheltered life and caregivers did not give mc autonomy or independence but rather conditioned them to he submissive and obedient.

They see everyone else has moved on in life and progressed except them.
