Advice becoming a driver
I’ve wanted to become a train driver for years now, but I’ve only recently started looking into what it actually takes.
I’m a 29-year-old mechanical fitter with nearly four years of rail industry experience, mostly stripping and building bogies, and currently assembling HVAC units. I also hold a 360 excavator licence, though it’s expired.
I’m mostly wondering what I can do to boost my chances once I start sending my CV out. What experience and qualifications do you think would help me stand out?
From what I’ve read, starting out as a conductor is one of the more likely ways. I’ve also heard that working as a shunter for a freight company can often lead to a full-time driving roles.
Any advice or tips you could share would be appreciated.
