Long commute for postdoc
Hi everyone! Recent PhD grad here looking for advice about a potential postdoc position. Here’s my situation:
My husband was able to go remote at his job so he could move to my city while I did my PhD, but after so many years remote they’re requiring him to return to the office, so we’re moving back to that city for my postdoc. I got an interview for a position at a lab that would be about an hour commute each way from where we’d want to live, which normally I’d never consider, but the position itself is exactly what I’ve dreamed of doing for my entire career. I’m in the biomedical sciences and there are only a few labs with this capability in the country, so this would be a HUGE opportunity for me.
Does anyone else have a long commute to and from their postdoc? My concern is that the nature of my research often requires weird/long hours, and I’d worry I’d have very limited free time at home since 2 hours each day would be taken up by my commute. I value my social life and we’re also planning on getting a dog, which seems out of the question if I’m never gonna be home.
TLDR: Is my dream postdoc position worth having an hour commute each way every day? Will I be miserable?
