My Preply tutor’s account was hacked, her earnings were stolen, and now her account has been deleted. Has anyone successfully recovered a hacked tutor account?
I’m posting this on behalf of one of my Preply tutors because I’m trying to help her find a solution.
She has been teaching on Preply for about four years and built her entire teaching career on the platform.
A few days ago, she received a message from someone claiming to need her help. The person sent her a file to download. Unfortunately, after opening the file and entering her email address, her account was compromised.
Shortly afterward:
The hacker changed her payout information.
Money was transferred out of her account.
She immediately contacted Preply to report that her account had been hacked.
Later, she was informed that her account had been deleted.
She has already contacted Preply support multiple times and provided all the information they requested. As one of her students, I also contacted support, but they understandably cannot discuss another user’s account because of privacy regulations.
As someone working in IT, I understand that when an account is shown as “deleted,” it does not necessarily mean all data has been permanently erased. However, I also understand that only Preply can decide whether an account can actually be restored.
My tutor is from Pakistan, so she is not covered by GDPR in the way some European users are. She has already submitted appeals and is still waiting for a meaningful response.
I’m not here to attack Preply. I simply want to know:
Has anyone here successfully recovered a hacked tutor account?
Is there any way to reach Preply’s Security or Trust & Safety team instead of regular customer support?
Is there anything else she should do to improve her chances of getting her account back?
She lost four years of work, her students, and her income because of what appears to be a phishing attack. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.
