Need help on drainage for plants
I live in a 9B area in stanislaus county. Here are the plants I bought and I’m planting
- red buckwheat in a half a wine barrel,
-Scarlet monkey flower in a 21.5” diameter x 21.5” deep pot,
- CA fuchsia in a 21.5” diameter x 21.5” deep pot,
- and humming bird sage 12.5 “ wide x 22.5” deep pot.
I couldn’t get my hands on pumice so I got Vigoro red lava rocks from Home Depot. They are pretty big so I’m breaking them down with a hammer. However a majority of the rocks are like an inch long and 1/2” or 3/4” wide. Breaking all of these would be a little devious. (〃 ̄∇ ̄)
So my question is, would it be alright with using those rocks for drainage for the plants listed above or should I break them down? I do have 3/8” (10mm) perlite that I can mix in but I read online that perlite isn’t great for the long- run for perennials.
My I’m trying to go 50/50 with inorganic and organic matter for all of these (except for the scarlet monkey flower in which it would be more 30/70 since they tolerate wetter soil)
Any support would really be appreciated.
