Ground speed question
I’ve noticed on several of the flights that the ground speed looks like it drops significantly - on the app it goes from like 400 something knots to close to zero, then back to 400
What would the reason for that be?

Hello - I have a question about flights over the Atlantic because I fly these routes a couple of times per year. I know the planes are ETOPS certified, however the routes mid Atlantic look so far from anywhere to land.
This fall I’ll be flying Atlanta to Rome and the tracks I’ve seen on flight radar look over the Atlantic most of the way but far south from places to land once you get over the ocean. Also 3 hours to the nearest landing place seems really far to go if there was an emergency like fire or engine failure.
How is it safe to be flying over the middle of the ocean if something emergent happens and then still be hours from a landing place? Seems like it’s too far away to be safe
Thank you
Hi :) a couple of times a year I fly on a short overseas flight (always N Atlantic from US to Europe)
I know the planes are ETOPS certified but the idea of something emergent happening 2-3 hours from somewhere to land gives me a lot of anxiety. That plus the rides tend to be bumpy over the ocean part, and 3 hours of overwater route feels soo long to me.
I know the likelihood of something like engine failure, fire, etc that would necessitate landing is low, but it makes me feel like these trips are “unsafe” and of course I worry I’ll be one on of the flights with an issue.
I’m flying US to Italy in a couple months and worried about the oceanic turbulence & just being hours away from a landing spot. Some reassurance would be great :) thank you
