The evaluation bar never goes up on your turn: A mindset shift that increased my Elo

I am currently learning chess and recently discovered a helpful mental framework that I thought I'd share in case it helps someone else

When analyzing your games, the best-case scenario after making a move is for the evaluation bar to stay exactly the same. The evaluation never goes up on your turn.

If you don't play the absolute best move, you lose a slight advantage. Therefore, instead of asking yourself, 'What's the best move?' you should ask, 'What move will drop the evaluation the least?' This mindset has stopped me from blundering so much and helped me play more safely, rather than going for wild tactics that require calculating ten different branches.
