First Court Appearance in NSW What Should I Expect? (Legal Aid / Duty Lawyer / Interpreter)
Hi everyone, I’m a French speaker currently dealing with a Local Court matter in NSW. I’m due to attend Newcastle Local Court and I’m trying to understand the process because this is my first time dealing with court.
I have an interpreter already requested, I’m currently under financial stress and without stable accommodation, and I’ve been told to speak with Legal Aid or a duty lawyer because I can’t afford private representation.
I’m not trying to avoid court or responsibilities. I’m just looking for general information on what usually happens at the first appearance, how duty lawyers work, whether interpreters are usually available, and what I should realistically expect next.
Any respectful advice from people familiar with NSW Local Court would be appreciated.
