Replaced a window and now your brick doesn't match? Here's what actually works.
This comes up constantly in masonry and home improvement threads. Someone removes or adds a window, patches a wall, or completes a repair and the new brick sticks out like a sore thumb.
Sourcing original brick is nearly impossible. Manufacturers discontinue colors. Dye lots vary. Even "matching" brick from the same supplier looks different once it weathers.
The fix most people don't know about is mineral staining.
Here's how it works:
- A potassium silicate stain penetrates the brick and mortar instead of sitting on top like paint
- It bonds chemically through a process called silicification
- The finish is breathable, UV resistant, and permanent
- Coverage runs about 300 to 350 sq ft per gallon per coat
You use a product called Fixativ to thin the stain for more transparent, layered applications. This lets you build color gradually and get a precise match rather than going too dark on the first coat.
It works on brick, stone, concrete, stucco, CMU block, and mortar.
No film. No peeling. No repainting in 5 years.
