Service Engineers - Rotary Pump Oil Change

Service Engineers - Rotary Pump Oil Change

I've been a service engineer for almost 10 years, coving various instruments, but most recently I've been predominantly an LCMS engineer. Changing oil in a rotary pump has always been a simple task, get the pump up on something, release the drain plug and collect the oil in a suitable container. Simple with a GCMS pump, but a bit harder with something like an Edwards E2M28 or Agilent DS602 just from the weight.

Anyway, today I was doing some repairs when I saw an Agilent Engineer using an oil extraction pump like the one pictured. He didn't need to lift the rotary pump, just stuck the tube in and pumped away. I asked him about it and he suggested it was a pretty common way to do it. I know car mechanics often argue whether it gets all the old oil out, but also Mercedes and a couple other OEMs recommend them. Yet I've never heard of them being used on rotary pumps.

Honestly I tend to let the oil drain whilst doing something else, so I'm not sure how much time this really saves. But is this a common approach?
