Cons
- stock down 84.4% over last 8 months
- slow economy, cost consciousness causing big Revenue slowdown, from 21% projected just 3 months ago for all of 2026 to now only 5%.
- EPS now negative
- Rising competition from "Big Egg", like CALM, Cal-Maine, who now have a growing specialty eggs division, with "Cage-Free" eggs, chickens given a prison yard with avg size of 108 sq feet, far less than the open pasture raised environment of Vital Farms, small family farms
- wholesale egg prices have fallen to lowest level in decade, 0.16 cents/dozen, due to over response/breeding to avian flu a few years ago when price hit $8/dozen
Thesis - great brand but not impenetrable MOAT, Big Egg trying to breech the castle walls with their own cheaper specialty eggs, however "Pasture Raised" chickens have deep and broad and growing following and are here to stay. Economic slowdown will force lower price margins and profits, but this can force company to slowly renegotiate 600+ small farm contracts to be more favorable long term and other efficiencies to enhance profitability coming out of slowdown when Margins will expand again. This is a deep cyclical Peter Lynch type play, so must have 3-5 year horizon and cast iron skillet stomach to get eggceptional returns. 😄 sorry couldn't help myself
