Hey everyone,
I recently got two baby map turtles and moved them into a new tank. Here are the details of my setup:
• Species: Baby map turtle (Mississippi)
• Age: about 1 year old
• Size: 5-7cm shell length
• Tank size: 70L aquarium (I am planning on getting a bigger one)
• Filter: JBL CristalProfi i80 (up to 400L/h)
• Light bulb: Solar Glo 125W (combined
UVB + heat) with a basking spot
• Light cycle: 10-12 hours per day
• Bulb age: Brand new, 1 month old
• Water temperature: 24-28°C
• Basking spot tem V ature: Around 30°C
I got my turtle in February and put him into a Plastik basket for about 3 days until I got my hands on the aquarium. Then about a week ago I put him back into the basket to clean the aquarium.
Yesterday, after putting him in the new tank, he started keeping his eyes closed almost constantly. He was still swimming actively, coming up to breathe and reacting to tapping on the glass but his eyes were shut most of the time.
This went on for about 24 hours. I am not very experienced with turtles and I attached closeup photos of the eyes. I am worried it could be vitamin A deficiency or an infection.
Today I took him outside in real sunlight for the first time and after a while he had his eyes fully open and was active. He's been keeping them open ever since. After that I put him back into the aquarium he started closing them again…
Is it an infection, vitamin A deficiency, or just stress from moving into a new tank?
Any advice appreciated!
