After 8 interviews and 3 assignments, I got rejected. I sent them an invoice for my time, and they paid.
Guys, I'm currently drowning in the chaos of job hunting. This was the third time I've gone through 8 interviews and still didn't get the job. The last time this happened, they at least had a logical explanation and we handled it well. There were no weird feelings, and they even referred me to a few other companies.
This time, though, it was 8 interviews and 3 assignments, and honestly that's an insane amount of "free work" for them to expect from someone. One assignment is fine, especially since the jobs I'm applying for are pretty senior and in the $170-220K range.
I went through the whole process, spoke with almost everyone, and near the end the founder was talking about reference checks and preparing an offer.
Then suddenly they rejected me because I'm currently self-employed (which is only because I can't find full-time work).
I was clear from the very first question in the first call that I'm self-employed and have my own small agency, so for them to drag me through the rest of the process made the whole thing feel like BS.
In the end, I spoke with the founder and he admitted the mistake. I told him that based on what happened, I would send an invoice for the time I spent in the process - and he agreed.
I sent them the invoice and they paid it within a few hours.
But honestly, what is going on in this market? I'm so tired of these drawn-out hiring processes. They also disappeared on me for almost two weeks and I had to keep chasing them. There's no sense that there's an actual human being on the other side of these things.
I got the call about 35 minutes ago. I took the offer. My hand is still shaking
I just hung up the phone and I'm sitting in my car in front of a supermarket trying to get my brain to process what happened.
A few days ago I had the final interview with a small tech company I was genuinely hoping things would work out with. It was the fifth time I'd spoken with them and I felt like things were going well, but you know how it is. They told me I'd hear from them early next week.
I had prepared myself to stay anxious until Monday, and then the phone rang around lunchtime and it was the hiring manager. My stomach dropped right then because for some reason I assumed the call meant bad news. I thought offers came by email or something more official.
She said: "Hi, we've made a decision..." and then paused for a moment that felt like 20 years. I swear I felt like I stopped breathing.
"We'd like to offer you the role."
I basically didn't say anything for about 8 seconds because I genuinely thought I had heard her wrong. After 5 months of rejections, no responses, weird interview loops, and feeling like I wasn't going to find a place at all, it finally happened.
They want me to start in 3 weeks. I still feel like it hasn't fully sunk in.
This sub got me through some really awful days during the worst 5 months I've had in a long time, so I wanted to share what helped me instead of disappearing now that I got good news:
ChatGPT to find smaller and niche job boards: https://chat.openai.com
Teal to track applications and tailor resumes: https://www.tealhq.com
Apollo to find recruiter emails and do outreach: https://www.apollo.io
There's also this post with very valuable information about interviews and a compilation of the most asked questions in interviews.
The biggest thing I learned is that this market is much more about volume than I wanted to admit. Put yourself in more places than feels reasonable, and eventually something will come back to you.
But honestly, right now I can't even think about tactics. I'm just relieved that all of this is finally over. 5 months of rejection after rejection does weird things to your confidence.
Sorry if this is all over the place. I needed to tell people who would understand, and I wanted to give something back to this place because it's what helped me keep it together.
If anyone wants to ask about anything, write below. I truly hope everyone here gets good news soon.
I refused to continue to the next interview round today, and honestly, it felt really great.
A few days ago, I had my first HR phone screen with a big tech company for a somewhat technical position. They explained to me that I would have to pass 7 interview rounds, including a live case exercise, a take-home assignment, a review session for that assignment, and then 3 more interviews with senior leaders in the business unit.
I asked them whether the salary range they had told me was net or gross, because that would make a difference of about 30%. HR got back to me today and confirmed that it was gross, which means that what I would take home would be about 45% less than what I was making in my last role.
So I told the HR person that I appreciated them considering me, but I wouldn't continue with the rest of the process.
Honestly, it felt really good. After being rejected so many times, it was finally my turn to reject the company.
It's not a revenge fantasy or anything. I just think that the pay is nowhere near worth all those exhausting interview rounds, especially since they include multiple case studies and hours of unpaid work.
