I’ve seen a few people mention the Charles Hotel as a Munich recommendation on here and just returned from five nights at the hotel.
Overall: We had an excellent stay and I’d recommend someone going to Munich to consider this hotel.
Check in: we had the hotel arrange airport pickup, which was exceptionally smooth. The driver was parked directly outside the terminal, no more than twenty steps, which was a nice way to start the trip. The drive was longer than expected, maybe 30-45 minutes. Our room was not ready when we arrived, which surprised me given that they picked us up, but they gave us complimentary breakfast (since the breakfast with the TA benefit doesn’t really start until the next morning) and while we were eating they came over with our room keys.
Room: We booked a two bedroom family room, which is two connecting rooms. We are a family of four, and many hotels have connecting rooms but this being guaranteed connecting rooms as a room category set the hotel apart for me, as I didn’t want to introduce any risk after a long flight of arriving at the hotel and connecting rooms not being available. That said, these were two very nice rooms but not a suite.
Service/staff: Everyone we interacted with was friendly. We had hotel breakfast three of the five days and the server remembered us each day. By the second day, she ordered my coffee for me and sent it to the table without me having to ask.
Location: The hotel is about five minutes from the train station, though it is secluded and you wouldn’t know. We did two train trips- Dachau and Salzburg and it was nice being so close. That said, these train station is not the best area so you’d want to weigh your activities and decide if proximity to the train station is worth it.
Drawback: This is not really under the hotel’s control, but I was surprised when I looked at my bill that I was charged 71 euros for breakfast (two charges, 52 and 19 euros) each of the three times we had breakfast. I emailed them and this is the tax on the value of ‘free’ breakfast, with it being taxed at two different rates, hence the two charges each time. Given that my son had one croissant at breakfast and my husband had orange juice and a croissant, we would have skipped hotel breakfast if I knew the tax was so high.
Price: a two bedroom family room was 1,100 euros per night, so about 550 euros for each of the connecting rooms.
Edit: added price and fixed typo
