Best SIM/mobile plan in China for a student? Need Chinese number + internet + access to social media

Hi everyone,

I’ll be moving to China as an international student and will be staying for around 3 years.

I’m looking for the best SIM/mobile plan that can provide:

  • A Chinese (+86) phone number for everyday use, registrations, banking, apps, etc.
  • Affordable mobile data/internet
  • Good coverage and reliability
  • Ideally a reasonably priced long-term plan

My main concern is also accessing services such as Google, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.

Is there any SIM/eSIM or mobile data plan that allows access to these services without needing a VPN? If yes, which carrier or plan would you recommend?

I’m considering China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, or possibly an international eSIM such as Nomad, but I’m not sure which would be best for someone staying 3 years.

If you’re an international student in China, I’d really appreciate your experience and recommendations. Also, please mention the approximate monthly cost if possible.

Thanks!

How do international students in China communicate with family back home?

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student who will be moving to China soon for my master's degree, and I have a few questions about staying connected with people back home.

I've heard that many services like Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X, and other Meta platforms are blocked in China. Is that still the case?

Some questions I have:

  • Can you use Google Search, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Maps, or Google Translate at all?
  • How do international students usually communicate with their families and friends back home?
  • Do most students use a VPN? If so, is it reliable for daily use?
  • What apps do you use inside China for messaging, payments, maps, and navigation?
  • How do you access services that require a Google account?
  • Are there any tips or things you wish you knew before moving to China?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your real experiences rather than just reading articles online.

Thanks in advance!

How is Hangzhou Dianzi University for a master's in Cyberspace Security?

Hi everyone,

I recently received admission to Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU) for a Master's in Cyberspace Security, and I'm trying to decide whether to accept the offer.

I would appreciate hearing from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with HDU.

Can we work in CHINA while doing a Master’s degree? How many hours per week is realistic?

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to pursue a Master’s program in China and I want to understand how feasible it is to work alongside it.

Is it generally allowed to work part-time while studying? If yes, how many hours per week do students usually manage without it affecting their studies too much?

I’d also like to know:

  • Are there any restrictions for international students?
  • What types of jobs are common (on-campus, internships, part-time work, etc.)?
  • How do students usually balance work and study?

Any personal experiences or advice would be really helpful. Thanks!
