Police at Pride Fest

Edmonton Pride Fest announced that there will be police at the parade. A lot of folks are outraged by this, which I can understand.

What I don't understand is what people expect to be the solution. There is no way that anything pride related (or just any big event in general) can go without some form of security, especially with our current political climate. We saw just recently from Berlin that attacks can happen.

This is not meant to turn into a hostile comment section, but I am genuinely curious what people think a solution is to not having police/security at pride is.

EDIT: I do not have an opinion on the police presence that is relevant to this post, this is 100% to get the community's take on the matter.

AI in creative spaces

This is not a new topic by any means, so I apologize if I sound like some sort of snob, I am just a tired artist.

Is anyone else noticing an increase in AI slop being used as advertising/products with local companies?

I've seen it around in artist markets like everyone else. The tumblers are egregious, being so obviously AI that I'm shocked no one has contacted these event organizers before about it (plus they are regulars at nearly every YEG craft/art market)

But it's spreading everywhere now, on restaurants, businesses, you name it. Do these people just have zero awareness for how damaging AI is not only for the creative community/graphic designers, but for our enviroment too?

Seems like every week I am unfollowing another local business after they post an ad using AI, it's a shame.

Edmonton companies, please stop doing this. I don't care if your ads look like a 5 year old made them, that is miles better than what ChatGPT or Gemini is spewing out.

Am I the only one loving the thunderstorms?

Maybe I'm just privileged because I live on the higher floor of an apartment building, so I don't have a basement to worry about flooding, but I am loving the weather this summer.

Yes, the flooding and storm damage is bad, I'm not saying it is irrelevant. I guess I just prefer the epic storms + rain over the smoke we get most summers.

Plus I will always prefer thunderstorms over snow storms, which are only a few short weeks away! (Ugh)

Hope everyone is staying safe out there!

Men

I work on frac sites as fire/safety. I am always with a partner, and we spend 14+ hours a day in a truck together for 3 weeks straight.

and holy God these guys are dumb as rocks. I've been at this for 2 years, and have worked with dozens of different guys, and maybe, 4 out of the 50 have been somewhat sane (and even then they are usually still incredibly racist or some other variant of deplorable)

I get riled up and irritated very quickly now vs 2 years ago, so I usually just devolve into being mute and just doing my tasks with only necessary, work related conversations. But even then, it's still like "there is no way you can be this unintelligent"

For example, we need to function test our on-board decon showers daily. There is a drain that goes directly out the back side of the truck, but for some reason unknown to me, my current partner insists on spraying the hose right at the foot of the door, creating a mud puddle the size of the earth. Ive asked him politely to stop, that there is a drain for a reason, and we are now just tracking a shit ton of mud into the truck, but he keeps doing it?? Hello???

Another time I had to use the outhouse. We have 2 radios that are connected to the lease, and he turns his way down all the time. Anyways, im in the outhouse, my radio and helmet outside (ive had close calls looool) and the consultant starts asking for us. Oh well, he will get it. Call two "Firefighters you have a copy?" ....ok maybe he didnt catch the first one. THIRD CALL i had to open up the door, reach out (still doing my business mind you) and grab the radio to respond. I get chewed out by the consultant for not listening, and then when he asks what he needed to ask, my partner THEN replies with "Copy that"

Like oh my god. His excuse was it was "too loud".

Anyways, that is my tangent for the day. I'm probably just a bitter angry person, but man alive I need to get out of O&G before I have an aneurysm at 29.

Weird bird carcasses

NSFW on since the photos contain dead critters, but does anyone have any clue what could be dismembering birds like this? Almost looks like the wings were ripped off together in one piece. They've been popping up every few days here in the Erindale area.

Fox? Cat? Bigger bird? Jeffery Dahmer copy cat in the making?
