Let’s clear the air on the "Udta Punjab" stereotype + What's campus life actually like?

I’m thrilled to be joining IIT Ropar this year!

However, I have some info from external sources stating "drugs and alcohol" stereotype associated with Punjab.

I’m completely clean, not into drinking or smoking at all, and I intend to keep it that way.

I wanted to get the ground reality directly from you guys:

The Culture: Is there heavy peer pressure regarding this stuff in the hostels? Is it easy to find a chill, like-minded friend group who stays away from it?

The Reality: How isolated is the campus from the broader state-level drug issues?

Campus Life: Aside from the serious stuff, how is life there? what do you guys actually do for fun on the weekends?

Looking forward to meeting you all. Any advice for a fresher is welcome!

Joining M.Tech this July! Looking for insights on campus life, workload, and the local scene

Hey everyone!

I’ll be joining IIT Ropar for my MTech this July. Before I arrive, I wanted to reach out to the community here to get the ground truth about life at the institute. (Whether you're M.Tech, B.Tech, PhD, or alumni—all perspectives are super welcome!)

I have a few specific questions, but any general advice is also hugely appreciated!

1. MTech Life & Workload

How hectic does the MTech curriculum get? Is the workload manageable enough to balance with upskilling, research, and personal time? Also, how is the lab culture generally?

2. Hostel & Campus Life

What are the hostels like for PG students? (I've heard the 525-acre permanent campus by the Sutlej river is gorgeous). How’s the mess food, internet connectivity, and the overall vibe of the student community?

3. Fun Times & Weekend Culture

What do folks usually do for fun after a long week? Are the student clubs (tech/cultural/sports) active for MTechs, or is it mostly UG-dominated?

Also, just to get a sense of the crowd—what’s the general weekend vibe like on campus? Is it mostly a laid-back, sports-and-chill kind of environment, or is there a heavy party/drinking culture I should be aware of? Just want to mentally prepare for the social dynamics!

4. The City of Rupnagar & Hangout Spots

I know the campus is close to the Ropar Wetland and the riverfront, but what is there to do in Rupnagar city itself? Are there good cafes, theaters, or hangout spots? If we want to hit up a proper pub or club, do students usually just travel to Chandigarh for the weekend?

5. Any Pro-Tips?

Is there anything—from academic hacks to personal life tips—that you wish you knew before joining IIT Ropar?

Thanks in advance for the help.
