Where do iPods store their firmware ?

My question is mostly academic, but I am curious where the firmware is stored on my iPods. I am pretty sure it is not in the iPodControl file.

I have a 2nd Generation with a broken firewire port. It charges but will not sync. Otherwise it is in really nice condition.

My workaround was to get an SD card, format it in a 3rd generation iPod, then switch the firmware using iPod Wizzard.

Then to get around the need for a donor iPod each time I needed to sync, I installed RockBox and just do a drag and drop for my music files. I also used the Flattery-B theme to mimic the native OS.

I was thinking about doing this again on another iPod. If I just copy my drive (including the hidden folders) it does not run. I do know that firmware is stored on the drive itself, but where?

I'm not sure what I did to my 5,1

Good Morning

I am having difficulty with my cheese-greater. Below is what I am experiencing. I tried to be as detailed as possible, so please excuse the length of my description. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have a moderately upgraded Mac Pro, 4,1 flashed to a 5,1. Dual Xeon 5690s, dual cd drives,Radeon 580x (8gb) and my HDDs have been replaced with SSDs via adapters in the cradles. In case of emergency, I keep an extra HDD with OS Mojave on it. Up until yesterday, I was running OS Sequoia on OpenCore.

I recently upgraded to a 7,1 and put the old unit in my closet, unused for about a month. I wasn't sure what to do with it.

As it was too good to leave alone, I decided to take it to my office as a replacement for my ancient Mac mini.

No matter what I tried, it would not boot up. I only plugged in the essentials, monitor, keyboard and mouse using a hub for the keyboard and mouse. I could hear a faint chime when I turned it on, but nothing. I then tired my Mojave drive and again, nothing.

Once I replaced the button battery, I was able to get Mojave to boot up, albeit slowly because of the hdd. After a few reboots, it began to work normally under Mojave.

I then did an NPRAM reset, the chime was much louder and Mojave began to run like normal.

When I swap the SSD, nothing happens. I booted in Mojave and added the SSD to see if the computer would read it. No luck, even in all three remaining drives.

I took the SSD home and ran a disk check on it and there were no errors.

I have OpenCore as an app on the Mojave drive and may consider placing a blank drive (if the computer will recognize it) in the computer and attempt to create a fresh Sequoia drive.

I have a full current (as of last month) Time Machine backup on an external drive and if I could get the unit to run, would then try a restore. But that seems to be a great deal of effort.

I am only looking to get it running and use the apps. All my data was transferred to the 7,1.

If anyone has some suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Casual Observation concerning Line-Out with iPods

I own several iPods and use them in my cars especially when I am away from radio or cellular service. I have one of those cables that has a USB on one end for power, and a jack to go into the auxiliary jack on my car stereo. Of course there is a 30-pin connector at the other end. This connector is supposed to by-pass the internal amp of the iPod and provide a low-line output through the cable.

I noticed recently, that when I connected my Rockboxed 5.5gen, the volume control functioned, indicating that I was not bypassing the amp. When I connected my 6.5gen which has Rockbox on it, the the line out works perfectly. When I install my 7gen, which uses the Apple software, it works fine too. So there is nothing wrong with my cable.

The issue seems only to be on my 5.5th generation iPod.

It is my understanding that the pin configurations are the same between the units, so is there a programming error or am I missing something?

If anyone out there could comment, it would be appreciated.

Thank you

Advice ?

I am a part-time instructor at a local Junior College and use a 2013 MacBook Air (i7 dual core, 8gb ram) mostly for Power-Point presentations and occasionally to check e-mail and texts. I have newer computers at home and work, but I figure if anything happens to this one, I am not out anything.

It has been running fine on OS Sequoia for the last year or so, but recently, I have noticed that it has been slowing down and become really laggy.

I want to keep on Sequoia primarily because of the security patches that it still gets and my school's strict enforcement policies.

Would I be better off, going back to Ventura ? I was not a fan of Sonoma, and initially found Sequoia to be a great improvement.

Any thoughts ?

Question about downsampling

I have been playing with iPods for the last two years and I have had fun with almost all the models except for the very 1st generation. I have Rockboxed a few and others I have kept the original operating system.

So here is my question, I keep all of my music in Apple Lossless form on a hard drive on my computer. I have several iPods that I have flash modded to allow for the larger files. But even though the later models will accept the Apple Lossless format, I believe that the units downsample the music before I can hear it.

If that is the case, is there really any benefit to loading lossless files on to the iPod or would I be just as well off to use some form of compression? Mind you this question is only geared to my iPods 5th through 7th generations and not any other brand of media players out there.

I have several pair of headphones and a great set of economy IEDs and both types of music (compressed and uncompressed) sound the same to me. I have a difficult time discerning between Apple Lossless, 320mpbs and 256mbps on the iPods.

On my home stereo, that is a different story, but I would like to limit the discussion to iPods only.

Thoughts ?

Advice for my 5,1

A little over 4 years ago, I purchased a 2009 Mac Pro 4,1. I performed as many upgrades as practicable. It has dual Xeon 5690s, 96GB ram, and a Radeon Sapphire 580, and all SSD drives with the exception of my backup drive. I then upgraded it to OS Sequoia using OpenCore.

It has served me well.

However I had the opportunity to acquire a 7,1 with great specs at a remarkably affordable price.

The reason for the purchase was that I had several photographic apps, and one video app that would just not run the old machine.

With that intro, I don't know what to do with it. It is way overkill for my office, (I just do work processing and a few light spreadsheets) but not worth anything If I try to sell it. It is still a great machine.

Any suggestions ?

Please, I need some help

I am working with a Numbers workbook that I created. It contains 13 pages, one for each month, and a page at the end for the yearly totals. Each page is roughly identical, with the exception, of the totals page.

On one page in particular, my rows are starting with 20 and my columns are starting with the letter D. If I attempt to scroll down or to the left the other information is still there. I just can't seem to get the page to default to Row 1 and Column A.

I obviously did this myself, but for the life of me don't know what I did or how to correct the situation

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Crop Factors with P25+ digital back

Good Morning:

I hope that this is not a silly question.

From my reading, the crop factor on a 6cm x 6cm film camera is approximately .54 when compared to the 35mm equivalent. Granted 6x6 is square and 35mm is rectangular.

The P25+ digital back is supposed to have a 1.1 crop factor when compared to the standard 120 roll film format.

So in order to create a 35mm crop factor for the digital back, would I start with the actual focal length of the lens then multiply by .54 and then by 1.1? Or more simply put, is the conversion factor 0.594?

Nowhere on the web can I find anything so this is just a guess.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Phase One P25+ synchronization question

Good Afternoon

I am not normally part of this group so please consider me an outsider with a simple question. I have a very nice 500 c/m since the late 1970s. It is one of the few models that had a female pc socket on the side and another type of socket, two in total. Very little documentation appears on the internet about it.

Up until recently I have been synchronizing my back with my lens, using the "X" sync. Recently I tried it with the sync on the body and for logistical reasons prefer to use it. Shorter cable, and it doesn't get in the way when I focus.

Not all bodies seem to have this connector. I am assuming that it is "X" also, but not sure.

Now here is my question:

The "X" setting fires the flash at the zenith of the shutter's opening. The sync for flash bulbs syncs prior to the shutter's opening. In my mind, the "X" sync may only provide 1/2 the necessary exposure time as the trip is not until mid-point.

Nothing in the Phase One documentation indicates which synchronization to use and I seem to obtain more consistent results when I am hooked up to the camera body.

Can anyone out there tell me a little more about these two sockets on the side of my camera and how my P25+ functions? And should I be using the setting for a flash bulb and not a strobe?

Thank you in advance.

OS Tahoe on a Mac Pro 5,1

Good Morning to anyone who is out there.

I have been following all the commentary on OCLP and the changes within the group and the difficulties in getting support for OS Tahoe because of the issues with the T2 security chip.

I was wondering if a computer were old enough to not have the security chip, why being able to create an upgrade, even for only some units, would be so difficult?

I upgraded from OS Sequoia to Tahoe on my 2019 MacBook Pro. Although I don't care about the liquid display, my computer seemed to run faster and more smoothly on Tahoe than it did on Sequoia.

That is why I was hoping to get one last hurrah out of my Mac Pro tower.

I read about a group of folks working from Asia that seem to have a version 3.20 but I don't think that they are part of the original group, so I don't want to create any problems with my computer.

Alternately, because my "box" has 4 bays, I could just put in a blank drive and take out my current one for safety, and try my luck.

Does anyone out there have any thoughts on the subject ?
