When given a verbal or informal offer, what are your usual strategies for increasing it successfully?
A few specific questions:
- Do you justify asking for more based on what you learned during the interview process, especially if the role seems broader or more demanding than the original job description?
- How much salary do you typically ask for above the initial offer? Around 5%, 10%, 20%+?
- Do you focus only on base salary, or do you also negotiate things like PTO, sign-on bonus, equity, title, remote flexibility, relocation, or review timeline?
- At what experience level do you think people should start seriously negotiating? 3 years? 5 years? 10+ years? Or should everyone negotiate regardless of level?
- Have you found that negotiating ever backfires, or is that mostly an overblown fear?
I’m trying to understand what a reasonable negotiation looks like without coming across as unrealistic or difficult. I’d appreciate hearing what has worked for people, especially from hiring managers, recruiters, or anyone who has successfully negotiated offers in the last 3 years.
