Should I stick in the civil service for less cash or head out?
Background - was in the private sector for 23 years, joined a public sector initiative to work with a friend, have now been in the civil service for 4 years. Feels like if I'm going to move back out now's the time to do it, I've seen some interesting roles out there.
Only thing holding me back is concerns around ageism moving back out into the real world where getting fired / made redundant is a real potential concern, especially when it sounds like we've got a few rocky years ahead economy-wise. If I get to 55 and I'm suddenly looking for a new role, I'm conscious that in tech that's not easy - grey hair isn't a selling point.
At the same time, I suppose I worry that the civil service isn't the guaranteed role to retirement that it used to be, and honestly the only thing worse than losing a private sector role at 55 is losing a civil service role at 55. I'm well aware of the rep civil servants have.
Any thoughts? It's not a "next 24 hours" decision, though I am applying for a pretty interesting sounding role over the weekend.
Ah yes other factor to consider, the private sector definitely pays better. Not even sure I had to say that bit.
