Update and advice needed!
hello fellow dye-rs! I posted a month or so ago https://www.reddit.com/r/dyeing/comments/1shlmak/confused_about_cashmere/ about dyeing a yellow jumper and was given the advice to practice first. I did so on an oatmeal 100% cashmere jumper.
For anyone wishing to try it out this is what I did (I’m in UK so measurements are g and L)
pre washed with woolrite and let soak in sink for 1hr
popped into 10L pan and added lukewarm water - 7L
brought up to steaming temperature slowly
mixed 7g of acid dye in charcoal shade with some water
removed jumper, added dye and swished then re added jumper
gently moved jumper using sticks to try and coat all of jumper
left at steaming temperature for 40 mins
added 3 tablespoons of white vinegar.
left for another 30 mins.
turned off heat, let cool down and drained.
The water appeared to be inky black and I assumed the vinegar hadn’t worked but when I drained, the water was clear. Jumper is un felted, still soft and hasn’t shrunk. all in all, I’m so happy I practiced.
Now if I could ask some questions please?
it is patchy, this I assume is due to me not unfolding it enough, I was scared to move it but I feel like I didn’t move it quite enough?
this jumper was oatmeal, the other is yellow, am I likely to need to concentrate dye more?
I like the colour although it’s darker than I thought it would be. would I be better doing an initial dye with say, 5g of dye to 7L of water and doing it twice to get better coverage and achieve a slightly lighter shade?
thank you so much to this group for all the prior advice, you are superstars!
