Fear is fear

Hi all,

I’ve just published a new short story called Fear. It’s in the style of literary fiction and realism, meaning: no dragons. But there are other peculiar animals mentioned.

Fear is fear, regardless of the cause.

What do you think about academic analysis of Hills Like White Elephants?

I’ve just re-read this story by Hemingway, and I love how cryptic it is. Nothing is spelled out, and one has to slow down, re-read, and think to reach their own conclusion on what’s really going on.

I was curious about what others said about it, so I read the Wikipedia article on it. Now I’m puzzled.

It looks like this very short piece was dismantled comma by comma and analyzed under a microscope.

Do you think Hemingway really wrote this way? “Ok, I’ll set it near the river so that it represents two different ways of life. White Elephants would mean a sale. Absinthe implies an aphrodisiac.”, etc.

I write too. Needless to say, I’m not Hemingway, but I can’t imagine anyone being so mechanical in their writing and getting such a natural piece as a result.

Can it be that because Hemingway is famous, every word got overanalyzed into oblivion, and while he definitely had the atmosphere and the aim in mind, he didn’t really calculate the placement of each detail the way critics see it?

Layered sedimentary art by nature and time

[OC] These two photos are from the same location as the photo of the "head" I posted yesterday ( https://www.reddit.com/r/geology/comments/1vg7x2i/this\_layered\_rock\_stack\_seems\_to\_be\_watching/). This is the Adriatic coast.

The whole cliff looks like a gigantic cake of oxidized sedimentary layers with calcite veins running through. I love the upside-down "stairs" in the first photo and the awesome warping in the second.

Inviting you to read my new short story "The Stubborn Life"

Hi everyone, I love thinking up weird stories. The Stubborn Life is the newest one on my site: https://saraf.iwl.pub/p/the-stubborn-life/

Here's how it starts:

"The four of them were talking all at once and gesturing wildly in the basement of the palace: the professor of history and art, and the other three – not quite humans, one of whom was currently blaming another for a leak in a massive vintage water heater."

This layered rock stack seems to be watching something [OC]

This reddish rock rises from the Adriatic Sea. The coast nearby is a layered cliff of the same color.
