If elephants can recognize themselves in mirrors, can they also recognize each other - and what does that actually tell us about animal self-awareness?

We know some animals, like elephants, great apes, and dolphins, can recognize themselves in mirrors, suggesting a level of self-awareness. But what about recognizing other animals in a mirror? If two elephants look into a mirror together, do they understand they’re seeing themselves and each other? Can they recognize other animal species in a mirror?

Also, researchers assume animals that fail mirror tests lack self-awareness - but what if they just have a different internal sense of self, one that doesn’t need a reflection to confirm it?

Researchers mark a spot on an elephant’s back, visible only via mirror. Elephants that pass don’t paw at the mirror - they reach for the mark on their own body. What exactly are we measuring here?

Also, does context matter? If animals grow up with mirrors, would they develop a deeper understanding of reflections?

What do you think? Are there studies on animals recognizing others in mirrors, and how does self-recognition vary across species?

Are these experiments really showing self-awareness, or could there be other explanations?

FSW (teaching) outland

Hi everyone! I’m sharing some details about my case to remind myself that I’m not alone in this, and hopefully to support others who are waiting too :)

AOR: June 2025
Biometrics passed: August 2025
Medical exam passed: September 2025
ADR: September 2025
Review of additional documents: “In progress” since March 2026
Eligibility: In progress
Security: Not started
I recently requested my GCMS notes for the second time to see if there’s been any progress. My PVO is CPC Ottawa, and my SVO is Etobicoke IRCC.

Please, no unsolicited advice. I know the queue is long, and I just have to wait. 🌱
I haven’t contacted my MP or called IRCC yet.

Update: I called IRCC and asked every question I could think of. No major updates yet, but at least I got some clarification. My eligibility is currently waiting for an additional review, and my security check hasn’t started yet. Still hoping to see some movement soon!
