Okay, so I have finished the End of Evangelion and…well it made more sense than the series finale.

Okay, so first, the things that I really liked and the things that I was able to understand. First, the animation is incredible. From the fight scenes to the imagery when Human Instrumentality and the Third Impact happen, it is all around incredible. The fight scene between Unit 02 and SEELES Evangelion’s was very well made and very visceral, especially when the other Eva’s get up and tear Unit 02 apart. Knowing that Asuka could feel everything that was being done, it really is very hard to watch through.

Speaking of scenes that are very hard to watch through, the hospital scene. I knew that it was here and I knew what happened in it. But I didn’t know that it was gonna be in the very beginning in the movie, and it still doesn’t change the fact that it is a very uncomfortable scene to get through. “ I’m the lowest of the low” indeed Shinji, indeed.

It was also both concerning and frustrating to see Shinji act how he does in the first half. On the one hand, I do understand why he acts the way he does. He has just murdered Kaworu, he has pretty much no one left in his life outside of Misato and Asuka, and he has a deep seated self hatred. Along with all that, he is still just a 14 year old boy forced into a war against aliens from space, and now the government. So on that, I do understand why he acts the way he does. But still, it is somewhat frustrating to see him just giving up and letting everyone around him die at the hands of the SSDF.

It was also nice to see Asuka recognize her mother in the Eva. She at least had a somewhat happy revelation before things get even more brutal.

But with all that, the Third Impact and the ending. I’m still not a hundred percent sure what was happening, nor about what happened afterwards. Why did Lilith-Rei start to disintegrate and fall apart? Why are Shinji and Asuka the only two people left at the end? Did Human Instrumentality revive Misato and Ritsuko? What happened to Shinji and Asuka after all that?

I guess it will take a few more rewatches for me to fully understand what was happening. I have literally just finished watching the movie, so all this is just my initial opinions and things that stuck to my head. It will probably take another viewing or two for it all to fully understand what was happening.

Just finished Ep 19 of the original series and honestly, this might be my favorite episode so far.

Okay so broad strokes, I real did like Shinji this episode. Him deciding to leave after what happened last episode does make sense, even if it does put the rest of mankind at risk. It feels like the kind of reaction a stressed out teenager would make. Seeing him interact with Kaji was neat, as was learning that if any of the Angels interact with Adam, then the Third Impact will occur and all of mankind will die. So, I’m guessing that’s the reason all the Angels attack Tokyo-3 and not anywhere else in the world. It was also nice to see him willingly come back to pilot Eva 01 and fight the Angel, as was the Eva rejecting all other options other than him. With what we learn about the Eva’s later, it looks like the Eva is attached to its pilot now and will only accept them, like a dog who will only walk with its owner.

Also, nice to learn Toji is still alive, though based on the folds on his bed, one of his legs seems to be gone, sooo…that sucks for him.

Then there was the Angel fight, which is probably one of the best fights in the series so far. It was both exciting and stressful to have the fight happen in NERV HQ, with it even almost killing Misato. Seeing it tear through Eva 02 like it was made of cardboard was both an impressive display of power for the Angel and very wounding to Asuka, both in terms of her pride and also literally since she feels what the Eva’s feel. Also, is Rei dead? It’s unclear if she is or not, but I’m hoping she’s okay.

Then, the ending. So, the Eva is both organic underneath all that metal and has a core similar to the Angels. I knew from last episode that the Eva’s have organic components in them, but I didn’t expect that much. On top of that, where did they get an Angel core? Did they get it from the Second Impact? Did they make it? Ritsuko didn’t seem as surprised by this as the others and even seemed to have an idea as to what’s going on, so maybe she knows what’s going on.

Okay, I have just finished Ep 18 and uhh….Well holy shit.

Okay, so first, two theories were confirmed. One, Toji was the pilot of Eva 03 and two, the Eva’s do have organic parts in them. Where those organic parts came from, I don’t know and I’m not sure if I want to.

And second, Eva 03 went completely insane. I’m guessing the electric storm in the beginning was an Angel that possessed it? But either way, its design was cool with the sleet black color, and the sound design was also incredible.

On to the fight itself, how did Eva 03 defeat Eva 02? Did it jump it while Asuka was distracted or was it just really fast in its attack? Along with that, I almost forgot that whatever the Eva’s feel, the pilots feel too. So with Rei having to feel her arm get dislodged from her body, and if, and god forbid if, Toji had to feel Eva 03 being ripped apart by Eva 01, god those kids will be in counseling for years.

Also Shinji, you almost murdered one of your friends. That probably won’t help with his mental state.

And with Gendo, I really want to punch that fucker in the face. Like on the one hand, I get it’s a serious situation with presumably millions of lives at stake, so I get that you need to get the job done and Eva 03 has to be neutralized. But on the other hand, can’t you have a tiny bit of sympathy for your own son, who is being put in a situation where he has to either kill someone his age or be forced to watch someone his age be killed.

Like, damn man, with the way that finally destruction of Eva 03 was animated and framed, it looked and felt like a goddamn murder happening before my eyes.

Anyway, I hope Toji lives and that Shinji will….well he’ll probably not be that great mentally, but hopefully he won’t blame himself too much.

Okay, so I’ve just finished ep 16 of the original anime and woow do I have a lot to say.

First and foremost, this is Shinji’s episode because we get a lot more context on him and his thought process. Firstly, he seems to be the one who cooked breakfast this episode, so I’m guessing he’s the one who cooks in Misato’s apartment. But from what we learn of him later on, it makes sense. It was also nice to see him do well on the test, just to see him smile for once.

But the biggest thing to talk about was Shinji getting swallowed into the Angel and being sent into a weird void. Firstly, the actor who plays Shinji is fantastic this episode. Shinji’s panic is very well acted and the scene where he try’s desperately to open the hatch to the capsule and begging for anyone to help was both raw and honestly heartbreaking.

The conversation he has with what looks like his younger self was also very interesting and introspective. It helps to explain why he acts the way that he does, mainly that he is afraid of others not liking him and has no love for himself, which I’m guessing is due to his father not being there at all when he was a child. This also probably explains how Shinji can cook, because he had to learn to be self-sufficient when he was younger due to his dad not being there.

Then we got an image of his mother holding him in the Eva. I’ll elaborate on what I think this means later, but I just think it’s heartbreaking and sweet that when Shinji is near deaths door, he thinks about his mother. It’s great and human.

Then the scene of Eva 01 was able to break itself out of and kill the Angel. This is interesting and I did not see this coming because I just assumed NERV would follow through with their plan. The scene with the Eva 01 standing there covered in blood was incredibly animated and ominous.

Okay, so theory time. It has been said in a previous episode that the Eva’s might have the personalities of other people inside them. With the image we see of Shinji’s mother, I’m going to go on a limb and say that it’s her conscious that’s inside Eva 01, which is why it gets incredibly defensive whenever Shinji is knocked unconscious. On top of that, with Misato knowing something is being held from her, and Ritsuko being disturbed by the Eva’s actions, I’m going on a limb and say that the Eva’s have some organic components, hence why it can move without any power.

Hey everyone, if you’re wondering about my thoughts on Ep 14, I forgot to post it within the community but I reposted it here if you want to see it.

Now, Ep 15, and hooly shit that was a lot.

First, whatever is going on with Rei. With how Shinji describes her wringing out a towel as being like a mother, and with him coincidentally going with his father to see his mother’s grave and having no pictures of her, I mean, either she’s a clone of maybe his mom, or his secret sister like Luke or Leia. Those are my main theories as to what’s going on with her. No spoiling though please.

On that topic, Shinji and his visit to his mother’s grave with his father. I’m not sure what his life was like before NERV, but it seems like he was left alone to his own devices for the most part. With how much he wants his father’s approval and praise despite not seeming to see or know him that much and his mother being dead for most of his life if the tombstones anything to go by, it does explain a lot about Shinji and his personality.

And we got a kiss from Shinji and Asuka. I thought Shinji turning red was from him blushing at first, but then I realized it was because his nose was block and holding his breath in. Took me a second to realize that. And Asuka afterwards just running to rinse her mouth out was just the icing on the cake.

Also, Kaji seems to be working against NERV for someone else. Maybe for this SEELE and Human Instrumentality Council that they mentioned. That’s my best guess, but I’m also guessing it might be because of what was seen at the very end. But other than that, it was not nice to learn more about how his and Misato’s relationship ended, with him apparently reminding Misato of her father. Heck it was apparently because of her father that she joined NERV. And with the kiss they have on the way home, that adds a whole other layer to this complicated as fuck relationship.

And the ending, where Kaji and Misato seem to find…Adam, the first Angel, impaled on a cross with his lower half gone. Now, that’s a big reveal, especially considering the last we say Adam he seemed to be an embryo. Don’t know what kind of experiments they’re doing to him, or even what they want with him, but I’ll guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Okay, hope you all had a great weekend and I have just finished Ep 14 of the original anime. Still not sure if I’m at the half way point yet but oh well.

Overall, I really liked the second half of the episode, but feel more eh on the first half.

The first half is a clip show explaining what has happened so far in the series, framed as what I think is a report made to the finally named “Human Instrumentality Council” by Director Ikari. I felt it was helpful to get a recap on what has happened so far. It was nice to finally learn the names of the Angels I’ve seen so far, though on the top of my head I can only remember Ramiel and Sachiel. So overall, felt this first half was helpful, but probably my least favorite part of the series so far.

Now for the second half, it was nice to finally get some focus on Rei after it felt like she was just in the background for the past few episodes. She seems to be someone who is very introverted, but also seems like someone who is very confused as to who she is as a person, which are things that I personally relate to. Is it because she can’t remember her past? If so, it will be neat to explore that in the near future.

On top of that, the synchronization test with Eva 00 and Eva 01. The fact that the first thing both Rei and Shinji thought of when in the others Eva’s are that they smell like them is fascinating, as well as the fact that Eva 02 was not used during the test for some reason. Is it gonna turn out these two are secretly siblings like Luke and Leia? I have a feeling that might be it.

Then the Eva 00 going berserk with Shinji in it and attacking the window like how it did with Rei when she was in the Eva. This, along with their synchronization being similar, just confirms to me that these two have some sort of connection. They are gonna be secret siblings are they?

Then, Project Adam and the Spear of Longinus. Don’t know if the spear is a biblical reference or not, but I’ll guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Okay, I have finished Ep 13 of the original anime and am nearing the half way point, or maybe I’ve already passed it, not sure.

But all things considered, I liked this episode, though I was confused in some areas.

First, what I liked. I liked learning more about Ritsuko. She’s been here for a while and she seems close to Misato, I think they were college roommates, so it was nice to hear more about her, such as her complicated relationship to her mother and her attachment and understanding of the Magi system. And I am just realizing how many of these characters have parental issues, Shinji, Misato, Ritsuko, we don’t know much about either Rei’s or Asuka’s past’s, but they probably have some too. Does no one at NERV have any positive relationships with their parents?

On top of that, I also liked the nugget we got about how the Magi system has parts of Ritsuko’s Moms personality inside it, and how it might be the same with the Eva’s. That sounds like a big deal, because if the Eva’s have other peoples personalities inside them, then who’s? Previous pilots? Some of the people who worked on them? It feels important, and hopefully that gets elaborated on later on in the show.

On top of that, I thought it was really neat how the staff had to find a way to stop the Angel without the Eva’s. It was nice to see them think outside the box and the solution they came up with was really creative.

Though I will admit, I was a little confused on what was thrown out there. I’m not the most techy guy on the planet, so when I heard some of what the characters were saying about what was happening, I was kind of lost.

Things I am curious about now are Director Ikari prioritizing Eva 01 over the others, NERV doing whatever it’s doing with Adam, whatever Kaji is getting up too. I feel like they will be resolved later on, so I will my breath and see what happens with them.

Also the reveal that the kids were stuck in the tubes in the middle of a lake this whole time was kind of funny.

Okay, so I have made it to Ep 10, the double digits. And again, I will iterate that I have just watched this episode and am writing down my immediate thoughts, so nothing to in depth here, sorry😭

Okay, so with that out of the way, I really liked this episode. It was both nice to see NERV try to be more proactive in combating the Angels by trying to capture an embryo of one in Earths Magma, as well as seeing how the job of piloting the Eva’s often means that Shinji, Asuka, and Rei are kind of denied a lot of the trappings of childhood such as school trips.

It was kind of interesting to learn that Asuka doesn’t fully understand Japanese writing, even though I think they’re all speaking Japanese in the show. Along with that, apparently Asuka has already graduated college. I don’t if that is a joke or not, but still, I think it’s a nice addition to her character.

The fight with the hatched Angel in the magma was a nice one. The fact the Eva 02 doesn’t have a whole lot of movement options meaning it had to get a bit more creative with how it killed the Angel was neat. On top of that, the way Asuka ends up killing the Angel is pretty creative and a good showcase of her intelligence. Though one thing I was confused by was when Shinji saved Asuka from falling in the magma. We saw how the Eva 02’s scuba suit was starting to cave into itself, so should something similar to that have happened to Eva 01 when it went in, or am I missing something.

And at the end, it turns Misato has a scar from the Second Impact. I’m really curious if they will show what the Second Impact was like later on. Though for the moment, it was nice to see the characters have some time to relax after everything they’ve been through these last few episodes, especially Shinji.

Okay, I have just finished Ep 9 of the Original Neon Genesis Evangelion series, so these are my fresh thoughts. Again I have little knowledge of what happens later in their series so some of what I say will probably age like fine milk.

Overall, I really liked this episode, probably my favorite or at least second favorite so far. Some highlights for me, was 1) the montage of Asuka and Shinji trying to synchronize their movements and getting it right with some major caveats, 2) Asuka herself is still so far the best character to me, the arguments her and Shinji have for the most part feel like arguments kids their age would have, and 3) the final battle with the Angel with the only audio being the music as the Eva’s work in unison, it is so far the best action sequence in the series so far despite it not being that long, and the argument was kind of funny.

As for Misato and Ryoji, I am curious as to how their relationship fell apart, especially since Ritsuko seems to be on good terms with him. Adding on to that, Ryoji did it. I don’t know what he did or what he’s going to do later in their series so series, but I have a feeling that he’s doing something that probably won’t benefit NERV.

And that leaves the sleeping together scene. So Shinji attempted to kiss Asuka. I am vaguely aware of Shinji doing something REALLY bad later on in the series, so I’m curious if this foreshadowing for that, or if the is something deeper going on. On top, Asuka herself whispered for her mother in her sleep. So I’m gonna guess and say that maybe she died and Asuka has no other family, so that’s why she is so obsessed with piloting the Eva 02 and doing a great job, because she literally has nothing else in her life. Again, spitballing here.

Okay, this is the third post I have made where I take all my thoughts after having freshly finished watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and put them up for the world to see. These are my thoughts on Ep 8 Asuka Strikes!.

Okay, to keep things simple, I thought this episode is really damn good, which is what I have to say about the whole show so far.

First of, the character the episode is named after. I really like Asuka as a character. She gives off a vibe of both being extremely confident, but also has something going on underneath it that makes her very interesting to watch. Seeing her interact with Shinji and essentially tell him that she’s the real deal was kind of funny. I also really like that moment at the end where they have to syncretize their thoughts to open the Angels mouth, as for a sec I thought was gonna go wrong. And know that she is going to the same school as Shinji, it will be nice to see them interact more.

And you know what, I also relate to Kensuke a lot in this episode. If I was stuck on an antique military aircraft carrier, I would also be running around filming everything like I was kind in a Toys R Us. Honestly, more power to him.

Adding on to that, I also really like the design of Eva 02. The red makes it strike out compared to the other Eva’s and the fact that it was made in Germany is a nice bit of world building in my opinion. On the topic of the world building, the fight underwater with the sunken city at the bottom was both a great action setting and a nice way to show how the Second Impact affected the world.

As for the ending, and the briefcase containing what Director Ikari claimed to be…Adam. I knew going into this series that it had some biblical influence considering the Angels, but I am fascinated by this inclusion and wonder how that’s gonna be addressed going forward.

Hello, this is my second post on what is pretty much a newbie first watch through of the original series, with this being my thoughts on episode, well, seven. I have just watched the episode and am posting this immediately afterwards, so apologies if this comes out a bit rushed.

Okay, so first impressions, I really, really liked it.

One thing I thought was very neat is seeing other people and nations come up with different ideas or mechas to take down the Angels. This, alongside the comment about an Angel being the cause of the Second Impact and MELTING Antarctica, makes it feel like the Angel invasion is truly a planetary threat that affects everyone. Makes sense other people would try to make their own mechas to combat them. Granted it doesn’t work here, but eh, points for trying.

I also think it was a great episode for Misato. The duality of her being an absolute slob and home, but being comedically professional and competent when it comes to the job is fascinating. Along with that, it was also interesting to see her act calmly when the JB, I think the name of the mecha, was almost about to explode, showing her apparently not afraid to die, which I think is very neat part of her character.

It’s also nice to see Shinji finally act calmly, at least in the beginning, and hang out with the boys. After seeing this boy be put through the wringer in the last six episodes and a little bit in this one, it was nice to finally see him act a bit his age. Along with that, seeing the boys explain to him that Misato acting like a slob around is her being her authentic self around him and him understanding that was a neat way to end the episode.

Overall, I really liked the episode, 8/10, can’t wait to see more and learn more about the mystery as to why the JB malfunctioned. Until then, seeing you later👍

Okay so I have just finished episodes 5 and 6 of the original series. I’ve just recently thought about making a series of posts to catalogue my thoughts on the series as I watch each episode. It’s to help me process my thoughts on this series, as well as to get your feedback to better help understand the series.

Okay, so starting with Ep 5, I really liked it. It was a pretty good introduction to Rei after 4 episodes of her in the background. The animation as Rei is syncing with the Eva 0 during her second test is genuinely great and abstract, making me wonder how this whole process even works and what it does to someone. The mystery as to why her first test of Eva 0 failed is a pretty good hook, and seeing the tension going on between her and Shinji over his fathers greater concern for her rather than his own son is interesting, as is the tension that causes between them over their different opinions on Director Ikari. The awkwardness between them is, if I had to say, cringe but in a simultaneously endearing and embarrassing way. It kind of feels like how I would act if I was forced in a situation like this. On top of that, the cliffhanger of Eva 1 being shot in the chest by the diamond shaped Angel with Shinji screaming as he felt it was a genuinely chilling end. One commenter I read said to watch this and Ep 6 back to back, and I’m glad they did.

As for Ep 6, I think it was satisfying. Seeing Misato take charge and mainly be the one to come up with the plan to defeat the Angel was pretty good, showing how despite her attitude at home, she is competent at her job and takes the situation seriously, though she is more considerate of the kid’s feelings compared to pretty much every other adult at NERV. Also learning she sucks at cooking, as well as the animation during it did give me a little smile. The mystery as to what happened in Rei’s past, such as why she has no family or friends interests me a lot and I look forward to seeing that explored.

The angel using it’s own beam to deflect the beam from the Eva was genuinely a surprise to me, as I knew in my gut something was going to go wrong, but I wasn’t sure what. And the finale of Shinji opening the capsule in Eva 0 to help Rei like how his father did was pretty nice. I read in a comment in my previous post about something REALLY gross and fucked up was going to happen later in the series, but for know I look forward to seeing these to interact and hopefully become friends.
