Tips for starting a beginner salsa/mambo class?
Hi everyone!
I’m thinking of starting a small beginner salsa/mambo class at my university, and I’d love advice from people who teach or have helped run beginner classes.
A bit of context: I’ve been dancing salsa for about 8 years, mostly as a follow, and I mainly dance On2/mambo. I’m not an expert, so the idea would be to create a friendly beginner space and introduce people to the basics in a structured way. I’d probably spend the summer practicing leading more seriously and taking classes before starting.
My current idea is to run a free 4-week progressive beginner course, capped at around 20 people, ideally balanced between leads and follows, with a waitlist. If it goes well, I might later continue with a Beginner 2 group and start another Beginner 1 cohort, but for now I’m mostly thinking about doing one good beginner pilot.
I’d love advice on any of the following:
- What would you teach in a 4-week absolute beginner syllabus?
- Would you start beginners On1 or On2 if the eventual goal is mambo/On2?
- What are the most important things beginners should learn early besides steps/patterns?
- How do you make partnerwork comfortable, especially for people who have never danced before?
- Any tips for explaining timing, frame, connection, and rotation clearly?
- What are common mistakes new teachers make with beginner classes?
- Any beginner-friendly songs you recommend?
- How would you structure a 60–75 minute class?
- Anything I should think about regarding safety, etiquette, injuries, or making the space welcoming?
I’d be really grateful for any advice, sample syllabi, song suggestions, or “things you wish you knew before teaching beginners”. I want to do this responsibly and create a space where people feel comfortable, have fun, and actually learn good foundations. ❤️
Thank you!
