When a design looks right on paper but changes once it’s actually made
I’ve been working on turning a few clothing ideas into real garments lately, and I didn’t expect how different things feel once fabric is involved.
On paper, everything makes sense. The silhouette looks balanced, the proportions feel right, and the details seem well thought out. But once I start working with actual materials, the result doesn’t always match what I had in mind.
The fabric drapes differently than expected, stitching changes the structure more than I thought it would, and even small construction choices can shift the overall feel of the piece. Sometimes what looked clean in a sketch needs adjustments just to feel right in real life.
What’s been interesting is realizing that designing isn’t just about creating a visual idea, it’s also about understanding how that idea behaves when it becomes something physical.
I’m still figuring out how to keep the original concept intact while also adapting to what the material naturally does.
Curious how others here deal with that gap between design and final garment.
