Making international friends.

Hi, what's a good place in your experience to meet new and international friends in Paris ?

My partner and I speak English and French fluently. We're both 30,

and looking to meet and make new friends.

We're not very social so not necessarily looking to make big groups of friends or events, we are looking to meet people that have the same "vibe" / "ways of life" so that we can be friends.

I would like to move past the small talk phase eventually and connect on more mutual interests with people.

Thanks for any leads.

Happy summer

Slow process of buying an apartment.

Hello,

I'm in the process of buying an apartment and this process is so damn slow !

I first visited the apartment I'm buying in mid May.

The promesse de vente was signed in mid July. 2 months later.

My loan application was submitted in the last days of July. And 3 weeks later, the loan application still isn't accepted.

3 months in and I still haven't completed the purchase.

I expect one more month to pass. Is this normal ?

Sometimes I feel like this shouldn't be normalized, why is everything slow ?

DBT pricing

Hello

Has anyone moved from DBT legacy pricing to the new DBT pricing ?

The legacy pricing was per seat, but the new one also limits how many DBT models you can build per month.

I'm debating the move to benefit from the new DBT features like DBT state, but I'm wondering if the dbt cloud costs will be expensive compared to the savings from DBT state.

Thank you for your help.

(please don't ask me to move from DBT cloud to DBT core, I'm a one person data team and I don't have the bandwidth to migrate to save 100$/month)

Has anyone made the switch from legacy pricing to the new one ?

AI driven analytics in a dbt + BQ data platform

Hello, has anyone used AI agents (Claude) to open analytics to tech and business teams to "speak" with data instead of relying on BI tools and SQL queries that need technical maintenance and take time to ship to production ?

I have a data platform that writes dbt models to BQ from the source datalake and I want to see perspective from data teams that have successfully used AI for analytics.

What has worked and not worked for you ?

TrinoDB as an alternative data warehouse

Hello,

Has anyone worked with TrinoDB ? What are your opinions ?

I'm currently working on a possible migration out of BQ and TrinoDB looks like one of the solutions. What other alternatives do you work with ?

My basic needs are to connect to a BI, the product backend db, Elastic, GCS and S3 buckets and BigQuery. Some tools will write data directly to TrinoDB.

I will need a UI to expose this data to business to query and analyse.

Have you worked on similar setups ?

How do you set up the data layers (staging, facts, datamarts) ?

How would you make data available in real time analytics ?

Happy to discuss and share opinions.

Salary negotiation with promotion

Hello, I'm looking for some advice here.

I’m currently a Data Engineer with 5 years of experience, making $115k at a 150 person company in the USA in North Carolina.

I’m being promoted to Senior Data Engineer and the new salary would be $120k

Context:

I'm the only Data Engineer at the company, we were 3 at the start of the year. A contractor who was removed from his post, and another senior who resigned. We won't be hiring any replacements or lead engineers, so I'm supposed to lead the data platform.

We have 2 data analysts (analytics engineers) and 3 data scientists

I own most of the data infrastructure (pipelines, modeling, orchestration, etc.). I helped hire and onboard one of the analytics engineers in May.

Stack is primarily on GCP

The title bump is nice, but a $5k increase feels a bit less given the responsibilities and the “Senior” title.

A few questions:

  1. Does this comp sound reasonable for a Senior DE in a mid-cost US city?

  2. What range would you expect a salary increase to be after promotion ?

  3. Any advice on how to negotiate here without making things awkward with my VP of Tech ?

Thank you !

They're testing our patience.

For the last 6 months I have started to believe that people in power (governments, businessmen, policy makers) around the world are testing the human patience to see if we will revolt like our ancestors used to.

This is happening all around the world.

In the US, the Boston Tea Party is known. Revolt against British taxes that kept increasing.

In Europe, the french revolution, the soviet-era revolts, the fall of the Berlin wall.

In India, the numerous revolts before the right-wing government came into power, and the independence revolution against the British.

Same revolutions against colonialists in the past in other regions of the world.

And today, look at us.

The American president bullies other countries, and has countless allegations against himself in connection to pedophilia and sexual assault.

Argentina is crumbling under economic stress.

Drugs and gangs are rampant in other latin American nations.

Europe has a couple of problems. Even in extreme heat, so-called developed nations won't make it easy for citizens to install air conditioning or have it on public transport.

Crime and drug abuse is increasing in many metropolitan cities.

Everything is getting expensive. People working normal jobs, blue or white collar, cannot afford to buy a home without being in debt for a long duration.

The divide between rich and poor is keeps increasing in every country.

Talking about AI replacing human jobs is so normalized today.

The media is controlled and used to manipulate people against one another.

Europe is known for free healthcare and education.

Education is becoming less and less qualitative. There are fewer and fewer doctors. Both are important for the progress of another. Bas education will result in bad healthcare.

We're asked to donate for a war in Ukraine. Or to feed people in Gaza. By united nations. Instead of them putting an end to these conflicts.

Africa is struggling because European Parliaments refuse to let their hold go. Their own situations will become worse.

Japan and Korea is seeing a population decline.

Social media is making us look less at each other and more at our phones.

Growing up in early 2000s, we would talk to our friends when we met and went home to talk to parents. Today, kids are so connected among themselves, they are able to constantly receive validation and opinions from other young children without the supervision of adults to tell them right from wrong.

And we can't come together to raise our voices ? We can't feel about problems like our parents used to ? We can't ask questions and expect responsibility from people in power ?

Solo data engineer reporting to VP Tech

Hello

Just ranting.

I'm a solo data engineer reporting to VP tech.

In 5 years, went from team of 4 reporting to data engineering manager to then reporting to head of data to now reporting to VP Tech.

I feel like my contribution and importance is only increasing year by year.

But I'm not sure my VP feels the same. Everyone else that reports to him has 10 years of experience and I'm at year 6.

What should I do ? How do I get promoted ?

Also, I'm the only person of colour in the data team. (2 data analysts, 4 data scientists). Feels like I have to work 3 times harder for the same compensation and promotion and opportunities.

Future of data engineering

What will be the future of data engineering in your opinion ?

Some say that programmers of all types will be redundant after 2028 when AI advances and learns all those skills.

What will happen in your opinion to data engineering as a field ?

I'm of the impression that smart people will always land on their feet in every scenario.

Vente interactif

Hi,

I'm looking at apartment listings and one very beautiful apartment has caught my eye. There is a price on the listing but the agent / freelance agent says that I should make an offer above the listed price.

It is a "vente interactif" meaning that interested parties will make offers and then interactively improve their offers.

What do you know about this type of real estate sale ? I have not heard of it before.

Has anyone had a similar experience or bought / made an offer for a real estate opportunity on vente interactif ?

I'm a first time buyer looking for a residence principale, some of the other interested parties are making offers as investments.
