There are ongoing discussions circulating regarding a potential, significant shift in roster construction rules for the upcoming season.
According to reliable sources, a major adjustment to the import quotas is currently being weighed:
- Reducing European imports from 6 down to 3 per team.
- Increasing American players from 4 up to 8 per team.
The primary driver behind these considerations appears to be economic. As the quality and professionalism of American football in Europe have grown, elite European import players have naturally gained more market value and higher compensation. Interestingly, structuring contracts for American players can sometimes present a cheaper alternative for franchises looking to trim budgets. While cost-efficiency is understandable from a business perspective, it risks sidelining a much bigger conversation about identity.
American players have historically played an essential role in raising the competitive standard and overall product in Europe. This is not about devaluing that contribution, but rather examining the balance.
