[AZ] Questioned whether there is "something going on with you mentally" and closed door in my face
I work for a mid-size company in Arizona and had a disturbing interaction with the General Counsel/Chief Compliance Officer (GC/COO). I am torn whether I just keep my mouth shut or put it in writing to HR. I just want to keep my job for the time being and worry that speaking up will be career suicide but also fear that I am being setup for being terminated for cause.
I have worked there for 3+ years, have 1 year left on my compensation agreement, and must pay back a $10,000 bonus if terminated for cause.
The GC/CCO was “investigating” a disturbance on the floor (open floor seating) that I had with another employee. The GC/CCO was speaking to me privately in a meeting room as a part of the investigation and he:
- Questioned whether there is “something going on with you mentally.”
- Abruptly ended the meeting and as we started to walk out the door of the meeting room, him first and me walking behind him, he closed the door in my face.
- I opened the door and asked, “Why did you close the door in my face?”
- He replied, “The meeting is over.”
- I replied, “You knew I was walking right behind you and you closed the door in my face.”
- Sent me an email stating “when assigned work by the NSA Lead, you refused the assignment and stated “no,” which escalated the interaction and disrupted the workplace.”
- The email concluded, “Please be advised that any further refusal to perform assigned work, failure to comply with reasonable directives, insubordination, failure to meet performance expectations, or conduct that creates workplace disruption or conflict may result in additional disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. Please confirm receipt of this email and your understanding of these expectations.”
- I replied to the email and stated, “Confirming receipt.”
I can provide more information about the “disturbance” and “investigation” but basically, I was written up because somebody else stated that I said “no” with no context to the situation. There is a lot more to that whole story, but the GC/CCO (my supervisor’s supervisor) clearly has it out for me because I have raised issues with him about other people on the team and in other departments not doing their job correctly and he does not agree with me or the way I have gone about it.
My initial concern is whether I should do anything about my first 2 bullet points/bolded text?
There are cameras on the ceiling. One of them might have captured him from a distance closing the door in my face. I suspect the company might capture audio in the meeting room where he made the inappropriate comment. Arizona is a one-party consent state.
