Finished Article XXXVII

Finished this sentence from Article XXXVII for the rector of an Anglican parish in Indiana. Coliro gold and watercolor for the white rose seal, India ink via Speedball C2 nib for the text, inspired by Fraktur exemplars by Filip Ciślak. Was a bit frustrated by feathering of the text, so will avoid this paper next time.

Critiques welcome.

Article XXXVII

Practice for a piece for an Anglican priest. The finished version will be in India ink on some nicer paper, with a painted white rose seal beneath it.

Speedball C2 nib dipped in PW Akkerman “Israel’s Zeeblauw” fountain pen ink.

Blackletter and Romans

I am lefthanded, imitating an exemplar from Instagram, either by Christopher Haanes or by Filip Ciślak or John Stevens. (Can’t remember, but I love these letters and they are a challenge!) I’m an amateur, and I suspect that some of the hairline strokes and flourishes that come naturally for these righthanded pros are forced with my overhooking lefty hand.

Anyway, don’t hold back. Tell me what I need to fix.

Blackletter with Osmiroid 65 with B4 nib and (as it says) PW Akkerman Diep Duinwaterblauw. Roman capitals in red with Osmiroid 65 and medium straight nib and Akkerman Garuda Rood.

Procreate Fraktur

Working on imitating exemplars by John Stevens, but using the Calligrafiti brush pack in ProCreate on my iPad.

Catullus 85

F-C model 50 Grandis, Raven 1.5 mm cursive calligraphy nib, Akkerman Zuiderpark blue-green ink, Wanderings notebook.

I’m so addicted to Roman Imperial Capitals. They’re just so much more interesting to do than other scripts. But it’s probably time to do something else, lest I bore everyone on this subreddit.

Sappho 16 stanza one

Franklin-Christoph model 66 Septagonal with Raven 1.1 cursive calligraphy nib and PW Akkerman Groenmark Smaragd ink.

More Roman Capitals

Franklin-Christoph model 50, Raven 1.5 cc nib. Akkerman Zuiderpark Blau-groen. The vast capacity of this giant eyedroppered pen has almost come to an end. I am looking forward to filling it with a different ink.

You can see the graph paper that I use in place of ruling, showing through under the page of the Wanderings notebook.

Protty practice

A bit of text for an Anglican clergyman friend of mine. Osmiroid 65 with B3 straight italic nib and Akkerman Shocking Blue. Unfortunately indoor yellow light doesn’t show the color well.

Akkerman Shocking Blue

I am very much enjoying this blue from P.W. Akkerman, here applied with an Osmiroid 65 B3 italic nib, writing the very slightly misremembered opening line of a hymn paraphrasing Psalm 23.

Minty Fresh Prince of Bel Air [Chevy Bel Air]

Saw this one down at the Harbour Quay in Port Alberni, BC. I think it’s a 1954 model.

Nicene Creed Completed

Osmiroid 65 medium straight Italic with P.W. Akkerman Garuda Rood ink on the pages of a Wanderings Large Travelers Notebook. I love this ink, and I swear I didn’t pick it apropos of the current discussion of blood.

I’ve grown somewhat in my understanding of Roman Capitals. I still struggle with the letters M, N, B, and U, and my hand tremor comes and goes. It was mostly gone on the last page, which was nice.

Symbolism Nicaenum

edit: Argh. Title should be “Symbolum Nicaenum.” Blame autocorrect.

More practice on Roman Capitals. Osmiroid 65 with italic medium straight nib.

Romans 1:24

Franklin-Christoph 66 Septagonal with 1.1 cursive calligraphy nib, Akkerman Zuiderpark Blauw-Groen fountain pen ink. Initial P in Akkerman Garuda Rood with an Osmiroid 65.

Catullus LXX and Sophocles fr. 811

Getting the hang of Roman capitals. Several bad decisions (especially failed layout and choice to use larger nib for one word) meant that this piece isn’t good enough to use for anything serious, but it was productive practice.

Trajan lines were done in Akkerman Zuiderpark Blauw-groen with Franklin Christoph 66 septagonal with Raven 1.1 calligraphy nib. Greek with Sheaffer calligraphy pen in the same ink, except for one word in Iroshizuku Ama-Iro.

First photo is the famous opening words of Pindar’s first Olympian Ode (an abortive attempt because I encountered problems with my red ink); photos 2-5 are Isaiah 58:12 in the LXX and in Hebrew, for a friend doing a home renovation; last photo is the Lord’s Prayer.
