London's first traffic signal was gas-powered and exploded within a month
1868, London. A gas-lit traffic signal operated by a police officer. It exploded less than four weeks later, injuring the officer. It took another 50 years before electric signals replaced gas ones. The progression from fixed timers to sensor-based signals took even longer.
