1. “A society that values freedom must accept that some people will use that freedom in ways that harm others.

The question asks if a society that values freedom must accept that some of its people will use that freedom in ways harmful to others. It's important to understand that acceptance in this context means to acknowledge and harm can be any impact that negatively affects and is a detriment to another individual in society. With freedom being a core pillar of many liberal governments across the world, as time passes, individuals continue to demonstrate ways that question the extent to which freedom should be allowed in a society. Some say that the freedom to act dangerously is a valid form of freedom itself while others argue that the freedom from unnecessary harm is crucial for any society that values freedom at all. In this essay, I aim to argue that a society that values freedom must accept that some people in the society will use that freedom in ways that harm other individuals.

Firstly, it is important to understand that without accepting the notion that some people in society will use freedom in ways that harm others, many of our world’s civil liberties will be curtailed. Namely, the right to abortion. Many liberal democracies around the world are in favor of abortion rights and legislation that grant women autonomy and freedom over their body and their womb, this is possible because society already accepts that some people will use their freedom in ways that harm others, in this case the unborn child.

In a similar vein, the right to suffrage is a value that represents freedom, the freedom to advocate for one’s political views. In a democratic society, most individuals participate in free and fair elections to vote for the candidate or piece of legislation that they wish for. Yet, by exercising their freedom to vote and represent their ideals, individuals risk harming others through certain policies. However, our society and governments still provide the freedom to vote, regardless of its unintended consequences because the freedom to express oneself is of paramount importance.

However, all things considered, others argue that accepting harmful consequences that follow from freedom in a society leads to an unchecked society rampant with corruption and crime, and that to effectively preserve other elements of freedom, society must restrict it first. This can be seen in the real world too, during war or times of crises, countries may restrict freedom of speech or declare martial law to protect harmful consequences that may challenge freedom even further.

In conclusion, it is clear that freedom can exist in many forms, with both positive and negative influences on society. However, a society that values freedom must accept that some people will use freedom in ways that harm others in order to protect liberties such as abortion and suffrage, even if it may lead to more disorder in society.
