I'm a 17 year old from a country where owning a drivers license is only allowed from the age of 18, yet today I bought my first ever car - a 1993 BMW 320 coupe. Stock engine. Welded diff, no LSD. The reason I bought it is because I wanted to learn how to work on a car and properly introduce myself with it before I can even drive one. You know, modifications, repairs and other useful car stuff. Now, I like cars, but I'm pretty much an absolute amateur and don't understand a lot of things about them - and this abitious purchase is, what I think, going to immerse me into the field.
First of all - what beginner level work do you suggest I do on the car to start getting into it? So far I've washed it and filled it up with gas. I'm planning on cleaning the interior and the engine bay tommorow. When washing the car I noticed that the puddle under it was a bit oil - colored. Now I know it's likw finding a fork in the kitchen with BMW, but I didn't expect to see that on the first day. That got me a bit worried - but not as much as the white smoke coming from the exhaust. As far as I understand it can be multiple problems, but it could have to do something with cooling? I geniuenly don't know. My question would be how to fix (troubleshoot) those problems and how serious are they? I suspect that fixing those problems is the work that needs to be done to it first (plus it has some visual defects that can be fixed with junkyard parts and superglue).
Second of all - I couldn't figure out how to regulate the mirrors or actually open the windows. I might be stupid for asking this but maybe someone knows how to do it. There are buttons that would suggest they do something either for the mirrors or the windows, yet it makes only a bit of a noise and thats it.
I plan on driving it as a student driver with my parent as I have a driving permit, but mainly I bought it to just increase my mechanic skills. I will be very haply if any of you professionals can give me advice.
TL;DR: New 1993 320 coupe, it might be leaking a bit of oil and is producing white smoke from the exhaust, can't figure out how to open the windows and regulate the mirrors. Interested in advice on fixing the issues and also other work recommended on it for complete beginners.
