Is weight loss from Metformin episodic?
I was thrilled to see my weight drop from 304 to 289 pounds after three months on Metformin. It felt especially impressive because I hadn’t made any lifestyle changes. I was still drinking at least three cans of soda a day and spending most of my time sitting at my desk.
Eventually, my weight loss plateaued, even as my extended‑release dose increased gradually from 500 mg/day to 2000 mg/day. I made a real effort to switch from soda to water and started taking long walks on weekends, but none of it seemed to make a difference.
Mysteriously, over the past three weeks, the side effects I had early on with Metformin have returned. I’m experiencing the brain fog, the gastrointestinal discomfort, and a reduced appetite. Despite not increasing my dose in more than six months, my weight has dropped to 279 pounds. I would be thrilled, but any unexplained weight-loss is worrisome. Until I consult my doctor next week, can Metformin cause sporadic weight-loss?
