[RO] Romance - Baby Blue
Saw this quote and felt inclined to write a little story
“It doesn’t matter if you’re the most beautiful blue when their favorite color is red.”
Baby Blue
The sun rose just before six.
Colors of pink, orange, and blue filled the morning.
At exactly six-fifteen, Ryan’s alarm sounded.
Most Saturdays were dull but today was different.
He threw his favorite song on and completed his morning routine.
His damp towel laid on his bed as he pulled his royal blue tuxedo out of his closet.
The blazer complemented his tone.
Sharp, dangerous, hers.
Time was moving quicker than he anticipated.
“I guess time really does fly by when you’re having fun.”
This was the happiest Ryan had been in weeks and the best was still yet to come.
He rushed down two flights of stairs hoping to make up some lost time.
The keys jingled when he stooped down to tie his shoes.
Blood began to rush to his head while he yelled
“I’m leaving mom, I’ll text you when I get there.”
Instantly, he knew this was a mistake as he heard his mother’s feet thumping from upstairs.
The fridge opened and closed before mom’s body appeared at the top of the stairwell.
At this point, he could finish her statements without error.
Ryan mimicked her movements as she moved closer to him, handing him the container of
“Blueberries! You know they make your skin glow.”
She took a few steps back to admire his final look.
Her phone flashed a multitude of times before he could walk out the door.
The video recorded as Mrs. Cobalt cheered, “There goes my sweet Baby Blue.”
Ryan made his way to the car and took a deep breath.
He looked beside him and the flowers still lay there from yesterday when he brought them.
He could not help but notice the beautiful Hydrangeas that stood near the cashier when checking out.
It was no surprise that he added, “may I take one of those as well?” pointing to the flower pot.
Ryan’s car stopped in the parking lot of the newly built fine dining restaurant in Manchester.
His heart pounded as he looked at her profile one last time before heading inside.
It was a table for two yet he was the only one there.
Minutes passed by and he watched every person exit their car as they made their way up to the front.
He waited patiently for her dark velvet skin to touch the ground.
She must have snuck in.
A soft voice called, “Ryan Cobalt?”
He swiftly turned his head and there she was.
Ryan rose from the chair and went in to give her a hug but her body hesitated.
“Sorry, my hands are sticky. I think there was something on the door handle.”
He looked directly in the eyes that would not dare to look back at him.
“So…how was the drive? Hopefully not too bad.”
“It was fine.” She muttered.
The conversation went dead.
Until she broke the silence.
“I-I didn’t know cobalt meant blue. I-”
She cut herself off.
Ryan’s lip quivered as he asked “is something wrong with my outfit.”
For the first time this evening she looked him in the eyes.
“I am sorry. I ju-I just don’t want to lead you on.”
A drip of sweat ran down his beard.
“I don’t like blue.”
His date got up and stormed out of the restaurant.
He spotted her stepping into a red G-Wagon and throttling it.
Ryan's worst fear had become reality.
The only thing he had to remind him of this day were those pale baby blue flowers.
