Here, the fake Jim appears to convince Ethan to go to the lake so he can be sacrificed and complete the number.

Because the children appear wet and pale, exactly like a drowned person when they die in the water.

When the ritual is completed,

the monsters will be able to hold their human form and come out during the day.
