How the heck do I pass SQL interviews

Hi, currently an early career job seeker applying for Data Science ft and intern roles.

I've had about three live SQL interviews over the past year and I haven't passed a single one. I do SQL leetcode and online problems I find from statascratch pretty much everyday as part of a routine. I'd say I'm able to solve SQL mediums on leetcode pretty consistently. the main issue I run into is that the questions I run into in these interviews are patterns that I've never seen before and have literally no idea how to handle. Its really frustrating because I practice so much and I'm never able to perform in even basic internship interviews.

Does anyone have any good resources for learning a lot of the SQL patterns that interviewers actually use?? (I recently encountered a gaps and islands problem and I've literally never seen anything like it for example).

Thanks so much, have been struggling a lot and really would appreciate advice.

Is there any hope for getting an MLE role nowadays?

For those of you who work as ML Engineers or ML focused Data Scientists, or are in the industry, what are your thoughts on the current entry-level market, and long term potential for ML Engineering?

is AI gonna reduce demand for MLE / Data science?

And for those of us who are trying to break into ML with mostly just analytics experience, what can we do to break in?

A lot of ML people I've spoken to told me they just lucked into the field early on and got all their experience on the job, but that isn't particularly helpful for me, wondering if anyone has more to say on it 😅

I'm losing all hope in the job search - need motivation

I've just come up on a year of job hunting since I graduated last year for Data Science and after hundreds of job applications, I've gotten a grand total of 2 interviews, both of which went nowhere.

I thought I did everything right. I went to a top school, had a good gpa and some solid club experience (nothing crazy but still), an internship (no research though), and am a US citizen who thankfully didn't have to deal with the international struggle. I accepted an analyst position after graduation, which I thought would maybe help me, but all I see around me are friends and people I graduated with earning literally 1.5x-2x as much as I am making post grad, in reputable companies with a ton of growth potential and responsibility. Meanwhile, i sit around begging for work half the time, and am gaining such little valuable experience with barely any opportunity for growth.

I've tried every option to get my resume reviewed, and I'm so confident that it's tight, so I have no idea if it's just something wrong with me.

I'm at my wits end, and I just keep thinking "what's the point" every time I submit another job application.

This might be a far cry, but if anyone has motivation or inspiration from their own lives or people they know, especially if they had a similar struggle to me, I'd really appreciate it :) I really need a reason to not give up.

(Data Scientist, ML) One Year Since Graduating, No Interviews

Hi everyone,

I graduated last year, and have been applying to new grad, internships, and normal full-time roles ever since graduation. I was lucky enough to get a role out of college, but it's a very low-paying and low-growth role, and I've been hunting for a new role for a while. I've been applying consistently since I graduated, probably putting in around 400 applications overall. I have yet to get a single interview from any role I've applied to, and I'm getting worried that there is something preventing my resume from even passing recruiter screens.

Some context:

- I'm a US Citizen

- Moved into a new role recently, with a title change, but still severely underpaid and without much opportunity for growth

- Living in a HCOL area (think Bay Area, Seattle, NY, etc.)

- Doing a part-time master's in DS rn

- Applying for primarily Data Scientist roles, but also Data Analyst roles when i see them

My dream would be to work in a tech company in person, but I'm trying to keep myself realistic. I keep hearing "the job market is tough", and "its a numbers game" but if i've sent this many applications and heard literally nothing back from any of them, I believe something has to be wrong with my application. I'd appreciate any advice, I honestly have no idea what I'm doing wrong right now. Thank you!

Hi,

I'm currently a junior data scientist at an insurance company. My role is primarily focused on building GBM models, and most of my work goes into selecting what variables make it into the final model through output analysis.

I've been seeing that most companies nowadays want some level of experience with LLMs, AI, or agentic workflows, and quite frankly I have no ideas for how I can get that experience in my current role. This isn't a role I really want to stay in (for a variety of reasons) and I'm really looking to set myself up for other DS type roles.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of optimizations, improvements or changes to my workflow that I could make to get some level of that experience? Especially if you are currently working as a DS with that kind of experience, I'd really appreciate it!
