My ex majorly inflated stock basis - what is the risk?

Throw away account for reasons!

I am going through a divorce and have discovered that my ex's tax returns has a shareholder stock basis in the hundreds of millions of dollars for a single person company that doesn't, and never has, generate income.

I believe he has this company for tax benefit purposes, as he's never done anything with it. He has a full time job where he makes on the lower end of six figures.

I am in no way a tax expert, so am quite perplexed. Why would he inflate this number? What is the benefit and what are the consequences of a major inflation?

I'm nervous for myself, being tied to him, but also for him.
