Are they friendly because I pay them?

Does anyone else run into the situation where the people you talk to most are the contractors/staff you hire? The gravel guy, the equipment rental guy, the mechanic, county extension office lady….

Since I get work done as i have the money, I’ll often visit a contractor or call them over several times over several months or years. This is happening with our gravel guy who delivers the stone and will sometimes spread it out. We have long paths throughout the property that we are slowly getting improved also our shed bases etc. It’s been over 4 -5 years of hiring this guy. always professional, but seems like a cool dude. lives nearby (for the country life at least). We want to invite him to lunch or dinner…but we also can see another 20 years of needing reliable stone deliveries and don’t want to ruin that…but it’s SO HARD making friends sometimes as a rural homesteader.

Any advice?

Where do people hang out?

Where do you hang out and meet knew people? Are there regular meet up or shops that you’ve met some great people?

I’ve been wanting to go the CSE Farmer mixers and events but it’s always during the week and I have work.

So uh, what’s up with the battle gear?

I’ve been wanting to ask this question for an embarrassingly long time.

What’s up with battle gear? Like full head to toe carbon fiber/teflon/cameo/ceramic plated/carabiner bedazzled body suits…with the helmets, balaclavas, goggles, knee pads, headed mounted scopes, gloves with knuckle spikes, boots…with knifes?

Is it attached to the always being prepared mentality? A little cosplay fun? Or like do you use it for work???

I know it’s probably a mixture of all of it maybe. But whenever I see gear like that out at someone’s house or truck I’m like bro

i know what subreddit I’m in, I’m legit curious. if there’s fun to be had I want some…but currently, I’m confused.

List of Reliable Contractors/Mechanics/etc?

Looking to start a list of local contractors that are a pleasure to work with, communicate well and show up for the duration of the work. I personally prefer working with smaller local operations but the reliability is getting so bad.

Advice: How to ask my neighbor to sell their land

I bought a few acres of raw land 8 years ago, the empty lot next to me was sold a few months around that time as well (same previous owners). I've developed the land and built a few structures. Since all that time I've not seen anyone on that land. It's very close to utilities and I'm guessing they ran into issues permitting but I'm only guessing. We’re in a rural area.

I'm asking mostly in regards to etiquette and means? I want to ask with as much respect and as possible. Not just to be kind, but I'd love to have land neighbors that don't hate me if they don’t want to sell. I found the mailing address that's on the property records but I also know they manage a small restaurant and thought about calling and introducing myself...is that weird!?

I wouldn't mind sending a letter, but I myself have received so many annoying "WILL PAY CASH NOW!" letters from developers, I don't even read them anymore and just throw them away, so I'm guessing they get a few of them too.

It's about an 3/4 an acre or so and pasture land. I’d like to put a produce stand on it.

Recently inherited an excavator mostly works, advice on where to start?

Recently, came to own an excavator. long story short, No one died. They used needed it gone and I said I’ll take it.

i have space for one, and would love to use it for various projects, pond, log moving, stone moving etc. the owner says it’s not as power as it used to me, but I don’t know what that means…
