What jobs should I be applying to?
Hello everyone,
I am graduating in August with a BS in Bioinformatics. My ultimate goal is to pursue something in either research or medicine, and my current rough plan is to work in a medical or medical adjacent field to explore which direction I'd like to go in. (ie Medical School, PA school, nursing school, Phd etc). However, I am applying pretty widely, as I know the market is particularly rough and will take anything I can get. I'd like to move back home to the SF Bay Area (unless I get a solid job offer in my college town, though free rent in SF is more tempting), so my search is focused there. My question/thing I'm looking for advice on is, what sorts of jobs should I apply to? What job titles should I be searching? What organization should I be looking at? Any and all advice or guidance would be very appreciated!
Currently Searching:
- Project/Product Manager
- Research Coordinator
- Lab Technician
- Patient Service Rep
- Patient Advocate
- Medical Assistant (working on my cert right now)
- Patient Care Tech/CNA (have my cert for this, in another state)
Relevant Coursework:
Data Science, Linear Algebra, Bioinformatics, full Premed sequence (Ochem, Biochem, Biology, Physics, Chemistry etc, all with labs), Information Systems, Applied Statistics, Advanced Probability, Calculus 1-3, Discrete Math, Object-Oriented Programming, Algorithms and Data Structures
Experience:
I've worked with a lab on campus studying genetic risk factors for suicide for the past two years, assisting with data entry, study design, tissue sample processing, and coordination with relevant agencies. Through this experience, I've also gotten to shadow and network with physicians and organ donation coordinators at the Medical Examiner's Office.
Since January (and up until August), I've been interning at the local children's hospital. My role consists of screening and enrolling patients in clinical research studies, serving as a personal assistant to ER physicians, and doing a lot of patient care tech stuff (ie grabbing supplies, paging specialists, positioning patients for fracture reductions, etc).
I did academic coaching/tutoring, household management, pet sitting and nannying as side gigs. Focus became working with students who were on the verge of being super seniors and coordinating with their families and teachers to create a game plan for graduation. Nothing particularly special there, though.
I completed a few data analytics projects for my data science, information systems, applied stats, and bioinformatics courses, but nothing extensive or impressive.
Additional/Possibly Helpful Info:
- My parents worked in tech sales for a couple decades and have some possible connections there. I am definitely planning on reaching out and at the very least, introducing myself/networking. My mom now manages the family business--we're partial owners of an automall. She's offered me jobs as an office tech/receptionist or service manager, which I am incredibly grateful for and know I am so lucky to have a guaranteed gig if all else fails.
- I've been offered nanny positions by a few families in SF, ranging from $70-80k.
