Heading to Japan for my first time. Found Go on the plane!

My wife and I just boarded a JPL flight and are getting ready for our first visit to Japan. I noticed that the plane had games and right before I clicked it I said to her, “I wonder if they have Go on this flight…” and literally the very first game that appeared was Go. JPL wins best airline.

Taking friend and his mom on a sightseeing flight - is this legal?

A few months ago I took a friend of mine on a local out-and-back flight for brunch and sightseeing. I didn’t ask him to split the cost of the flight with me as invoking pro rata cost sharing just felt odd to me - I was time building toward my commercial and needed the hours regardless, so I just brought him along for the good company and because he had never been in a small plane before.

A few weeks later he reached out saying he had mentioned the flight to his mom and that she expressed interest in going up sometime in the future as she hadn’t been in a small plane since she was a teenager and thought the experience sounded fun. He essentially asked, “Would you be willing to take her up?” I said sure, why not? I was still time building after all.

Fast forward a few months and I have since reached the 250-hour commercial requirement. My friend reached out again and said his mom is coming into town this weekend and wanted to know if we could all go flying. I mentioned that since I have already hit 250 hours any extra flying I do now is essentially costing me $X/hr and that while I’d love to take both him and his mom up, I would have to ask that we split the cost for the aircraft rental between the three of us equally. They agreed and said that would be no problem.

My question: is this legal? I am not yet a commercially rated pilot but I’m concerned that this might not meet the requirement of having a common purpose since I said I could only justify the flight if we were to split the cost. Of course I personally want to make this flight as well (it’s not JUST for their pleasure, it’s for mine too), so maybe that satisfies the common purpose requirement?

Apologies for getting in the weeds here. This legal stuff is just really dense and I’m trying to make sure I understand the nuances and that I’m not inadvertently operating as a commercial air tour service, so any insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Birthday gift ideas for my wife

Hello Reddit,

I am coming to you for help. I desperately want to get my wife a gift she will love for her upcoming birthday, but she isn't the easiest person to buy for. She has very specific taste and if she wants something she will simply get it herself. A few years ago I got her a bath board to hold her e-reader, a candle, a drink, etc. She didn't love the design (I later learned she wanted something like a live-edge board, so that's on me) and she ultimately returned it. I've been a bit gun-shy with gifts since as I don't want to get something she won't love and she'd rather save money than spend it on "stuff" or trinkets.

For context, her interests include knitting, bread/sourdough making, reading, dancing, pickleball, golf, and financial management (yes, this is literally a hobby of hers). Is there anything that you might recommend for a person with these interests? Thank you in advance!
