What trivial things would make you pass on a horse that was otherwise perfect for you?

Just for fun. I'm talking things like color preferences or markings or things like that which are purely personal opinions and have nothing to do with how good or bad the horse is otherwise.

For me, I've known so many horses with two back socks (and no front socks) that I would have a hard time buying a horse with socks like that for myself. I'm also not a fan of double dilutes like cremellos personally.

What about you guys?

Merlin is settling in at the new barn!

Merlin has been at the new barn for 1 week now. He made it an interesting week! The first day he was terrified of the mini donkeys but then apparently beat one of them up when the barn owner let him in their pasture 🙄.

Then 2 days after he moved in the barn owner messaged me asking if he ever got nosebleeds because there was *tons* of blood in his paddock and on his chest/back but they couldn't find a single cut on him or the horse he was out with. Eventually they found a tiny cut in Merlin's nose that had no business bleeding as much as it did. He acted completely fine the whole time and I can't even tell where the cut was anymore.

Today I got him out and lunged him and he did great! I'm looking forward to getting him back in shape now that he's at a barn I like so I can hopefully ride him again.

Moving day went well!

I moved my horse to the barn I've been taking lessons at and Merlin was about as perfect as he could be. Walked right in the trailer and didn't pick a fight with any of his new pasture mates right away either. Things got a little spooky for him when he had to walk past the *ahem* "absolutely terrifying" mini donkeys to get to his new pasture but other than that all was good. I hope he settles in well and I'm really looking forward to being able to see him more often!

Finally moving to a new barn and I'm so excited

My boy (Merlin) is moving to a new barn in a couple weeks and I'm so happy.

For the last several years he has been at a barn where he was certainly cared for and did well, but I didn't really like going to due to personal differences with the owners. My area doesn't have many boarding barns close to me so despite looking on and off over the years nothing ever worked out.

A couple months ago I started taking lessons at a new barn with a new trainer and I have been loving it so I asked her if I could move Merlin there. She said yes!

I'm so happy I'll be able to see my boy more often. Maybe even get him back in shape enough for casual rides (he's 19 and been a pasture potato the last few years)

There's more I could say about the old barn and why I'm happy to leave but for now I'm just focused on why the new barn makes me happy!

(Picture is older, but always been one of my favorite pictures of him)

Favorite "at home" workouts to help with riding?

I'm still early-ish into riding again after a several years break. To be completely blunt, I don't work out much. My job keeps me semi-active so I'm not totally out of shape but my only dedicated exercise each week is my riding lessons.

What are some of your favorite things to work on at home that end up helping you in the saddle? Bonus if it takes little/no equipment.

I think the main thing I need to work on right now is core strength and general stamina...

Aspen loves her medicine treats

I wish every pet was this easy to medicate! She's on pain meds for a face fracture and thankfully loves the taste and is always ready for her treat.

Favorite ledges & shelves? (Also my chinchilla broke her face)

I found out yesterday that my chinchilla has a skull fracture near one of her eyes (x-ray here for the curious).

She's acting completely fine, eating well and everything. She'll go back in a few weeks to get new x-rays and see how it's healing. In the meantime she's on pain meds and doctor orders to be confined to only half of her double critter nation.

Once she can have her full cage again I want to revamp her shelves and really limit any possibility of having a fall long enough to cause issues again. I thought her layout before was pretty good for that but clearly she found a way to hurt herself anyway (our best guess for how she did it is she fell from her top shelf to the middle and hit her face on her hut).

I was looking at some of the sets by Pandamonium Pets but does anyone have other favorites or tips they want to share? I want to let my chin still be able to climb and jump around like she loves to do but I want to make sure she's safe too.

My plan for my new SVVE farm

made with Stardew Plan
Now to just stay on the same save long enough to make this happen... My husband likes to say I enjoy starting games more than finishing them so we'll see

Finally "clicked" with a horse at my new barn

I started riding with a new trainer a few weeks ago - tonight was my 3rd lesson with her.

The first couple lessons she had me riding the uber-quiet completely dead to aids horses that needed all my leg just to stay in a jog. I get it, I was a new student to her and even though I told her about my experience you never know what people are exaggerating. But I felt like I was fighting to keep the horses moving a lot more than I was able to focus on my own balance and positioning and I was having trouble because of it, especially trying to lope. My first week I was only able to lope one direction and the second I barely got the horse to do half a lap and even that was on the wrong lead.

Tonight she put me on a different horse who had much more pep in his step and was much more responsive to my cues. Not only was I able to get him to jog much nicer but I got him to lope both directions! Even when he tried to break to a jog a couple times I was focused enough I was able to lift him up and keep him moving. I had way more fun because of that and really hope I get to ride him again next week. He belongs to a boarder though so I'm not sure if he's always available for lessons. Here's hoping!

Lessons after several years off

I'm going to start taking lessons again after several years off.

Before taking a break I mostly did hunter/jumper competitively but also did a bit of everything english & western with my school's team. I had ridden for close to 20 years before my break

I reached out to several barns in my area and finally found 1 with lesson openings and I am so so excited to get back into it. But I'm also nervous. I have my first lesson tomorrow and the barn mostly does western pleasure but the trainer also has experience with english.

I trust my knowledge but I am worried about what little things I'll have forgotten in the meantime. Especially since it's western which was never my main discipline.

How have others handled going back after a break? Any tips to make sure I don't come off as brand new but also acknowledge that I'm rusty?
