96 harley 883 carburetor question.

So was recently given a 96 sportster 883 and was having issues with the bike not running without the choke on and it would damn near die once the bike was revved. Tried cleaning the carb, main jet, and pilot jet but still die once the choke was pushed in. Put a new carb on it with a 185 main jet and a 48 pilot jet and it starts and revs now with the choke on but once I turn off that choke it idles and then dies. Ive tried to adjust the air fuel screw and it helped a little but same issue. I did notice with the choke pushed in halfway it sounded like a good idle but not sure if thats my issue.

Or by some odd chance is the choke needing to be adjusted?
