Hi Reddit! I’m a Marine veteran facing breast cancer, having just had my double mastectomy on 4/29/2026. Ten days before my mammogram that found the cancer, I was served divorce papers, and so am now the sole breadwinner in my home. My college-aged child has written the GFM for me, and I am sharing it on my own behalf here. My disability covers my mortgage and utilities, but that leaves no income for anything else like food, gas, and any emergencies that pop up. I am a real estate agent but cannot work while I undergo treatment (chemo and possibly radiation) for the next several months to a year and have no PTO/unemployment since I’m a 1099 contractor. If you have it in your heart, please donate and if possible share my GFM. I’ll answer any questions in the comments. Thank you!!
Edit: this has come up repeatedly, so I want to clarify that yes, the VA is covering the cost of care. This GFM is set up under the “rent, food, and monthly bills” category for that reason. I’m EXTREMELY lucky in the case of the VA covering the medical bills - or I’d be having to add a couple-few zeroes to the goal amount.
However, I will not be able to work for the next six months at BEST, and more than likely closer to a year. I appreciate everyone who has donated, boosted, shared - all of it helps! And it’s also helped with finding faith in fellow human beings again.
Again, thank you to the mods, the members of this subreddit, all the kind commenters, and of course those who donated!
One more thing - I’m going to document my whole process as I heal, any programs or benefits cancer patients can receive (esp with the VA), and how the healing process looks and feels to me (esp post a double mastectomy last week) so others facing this can use my diary as a guide to hopefully make their own journeys a bit easier!
Had my double mastectomy on 4/29 thanks to cancer; this little lady has been observing from a safe distance! She’s new to our home, so we are both settling in to our new normal ❤️🩹 She is getting up on the bed more, playing with the feather toy with me, and getting closer to me every day! Since we both need peace and quiet, she makes the perfect recovery buddy! (My mom and my 22 y/o kiddo handle the litter, adding food, etc. since I’m mostly on bed rest)
Freyja has been here for 16 days, so it’s nice to see her start coming out of her shell a bit at a time. I’m hoping that in the next few weeks, she will be comfortable enough to snuggle with me 🩶🩶
