I found a male polyphemus moth that was stuck in some grass next to a parking lot on a very windy day. I let him crawl on my finger to move him on to a tree, however he was struggling and upon further inspection I could see his wings are not fully stretched out. With the wind, he was not able to stay on any branches. I decided to put him in my mesh butterfly house so he can fully stretch out his wings without the wind, and I am hoping he will recover and be able to fly tonight. I plan to release him tonight so he can find a female. Based on the wing condition, he probably is early on in his life span and would have a solid week before he dies.
I wanted to check if that seems like his best option? I don’t see any major injuries, so I am hoping he can fly but I’m unsure. I know they don’t live long so I’m debating if I should just let him out now while it is still windy or wait for tonight.
