Advice for Writing a Non-Traditional Fic?

It's not exactly common, but I'm writing a fic more about the effects of war on civilians rather than the war itself. Starts with a Saderan civilian POV criticism of Japan. But I'd like some advice/critique for the future: I plan on making parallels to other "underdog" forces in history (Boxer Rebellion, Lakota, etc.), but I'm not looking to focus on the spectacle of war. More its effects and how widespread its suffering can cause.

Any advice for this sort of non-traditional fanfic is appreciated!

Any fanfics/media like Gate that go into the ethics of war?

Everyone knows GATE is kinda nationalist. It's fun to see RPGs and bomber planes obliterate dragons and all, but I always kind of wondered if about the consequences of this on regular people. Japanese, Saderan, just random people across the world, etc. After all, military intervention doesn't always go well a lot of people, even in the best of scenarios.

What I wonder is, are there any fics/similar media which go into the more...real side of war in these kinds of first-contact scenarios? I know some of the common stuff that's about war in general (ex. All Quiet on the Western Front).

Planning on making a fic about this, but I would love to see any recommendations.
