Is ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 Black good enough for coding backend, infra and light-AI?
Hi everyone,
I'm considering buying a ThinkPad with the following specs:
- Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, 8C up to 4.8GHz
- 32GB LPDDR5X RAM
- Integrated Intel Arc 140V
- 16" 2560×1600 IPS, 120Hz, 100% sRGB
- 1TB SSD
My plan is to install Ubuntu (or another Linux distro) and use it primarily for software development.
My typical workload includes:
- Backend development (mostly Python, Go and Rust - at the moment)
- Docker, SQL databases, Redis, Celery, RabbitMQ etc.
- Infrastructure/devops work (mostly Terraform)
- Running multiple containers and services locally
I also do some AI development, but not heavy local training. By "light AI," I mean things like fine-tuning or training on relatively small datasets, experimenting with older/smaller models, running embeddings locally and building RAG applications. For anything computationally heavy, I'd use cloud GPUs.
Also, if this laptop is not a good choice for this use case, I’d really appreciate suggestions for better alternatives (range up to 3k$).
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone using this machine (or a similar ThinkPad) for development. Thanks!
