Adopted trying to apply for citizenship by descent through adoptive family
Hello everyone! I was wondering if I could possibly get some help. There’s two parts to this and I’ll try to be as brief as I can.
- Do I qualify as you understand it?
I was adopted at birth to non Canadian parents. My adoptive mother’s grandfather was born and grew up in Ontario. She qualifies for citizenship by descent, however she is not sure she wants to apply. My original birth certificate shows my adoptive parents. My adoption was technically open, so records should not be an issue.
I have a wonderful relationship with my parents and they are willing to support me, they just aren’t sure they want to apply for themselves.
I looked at this website https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/application-canadian-citizenship-adopted-person.html, and it seems according to this that I don’t qualify but then I read people with similar situations and it seems like they do qualify.
- If I do qualify, where do I start?
I believe I would need to do the CIT 0010 form. Can I still do this if my mother decides not to apply? Is there a specific format for the documentation? How would I document this?
I’m quite confused, so I apologise if this has been asked elsewhere. I’ve been trying to read all the posts and they’re running together at this point.
Thanks ever so much for any help.
